COLUMBIA CITY — A Fort Wayne man escaped serious injury Wednesday when he was side-swiped by a semi tractor-trailer on U.S. 30 west of Columbia City.
According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Donald Gotsch, 55, of Fort Wayne, was traveling east on U.S. 30 near County Road 300 East when a semi tractor-trailer driven by Jason Roberts, 37, of Marble Hill, Mo. changed lanes and shoved Gotsch’s vehicle into the guardrail.
COLUMBIA CITY — Heading into Wednesday night’s home game, Columbia City head coach Chris Benedict preached ‘stop the penetration.’
But that’s not all the Eagles did in a statement victory over Fort Wayne Northrop 64-55.
The veteran leadership of a sophomore guard led Columbia City to one of its most complete games of the season shooting better than 65 percent from the field and topping an athletic and sizable Bruins team.
INDIANAPOLIS — The season started with two rivals meeting in Whitley County boys’ basketball.
Why not have it end with one.
Sunday, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) drew up the path for over 400 teams across the state of Indiana.
Among them, three county teams are vying for a sectional championship.
Columbia City (14-5) and Whitko (14-4) opened the regular season with a buzzer-beating thriller 59-58 in the Eagles favor.

Cassandra Petrie of Churubusco, earning the title of Whitley County 2011 Junior Miss last fall, leaves this weekend for the state program and a chance to become Indiana’s Junior Miss.
GARRETT — One glaring statistic stuck out Tuesday night when the Churubusco boys’ basketball team hit the road to Garrett.
3-for-12 (25 percent).
That is what the Eagles shot from the free throw line in the second half of a road loss to the Railroaders 47-40.
“It’s been a little bit of an issue all year and tonight it got us,” Churubusco head coach Mike McBride said. “It comes back to bite you and it bit us tonight.”
COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man who was found bloodied and incoherent, walking along Main Street in Columbia City Tuesday is in serious condition at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Ralph Anderson, 78, was taken to Parkview Whitley Hospital before being transferred to Fort Wayne where he was listed in serious condition this morning.
According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, a 911 call came in at 1:42 p.m. Tuesday of a man with “altered levels of consciousness.”
COLUMBIA CITY — Concerned citizens can view the third incarnation of Whitley County’s newest comprehensive plan during an open house today, according to the county’s Building and Planning Department.
Dave Sewell, the department’s executive director said last month there have been few changes between the plan’s second and third draft, citing mostly semantics, grammatical and spelling changes, adding the most notable changes stemmed from public input meetings and involved windmills.
Sewell said the public comments have pertained to wind energy, turbines and alternative energy devices.
Leonard P. “Lenny” Williams, 77, of Columbia City, passed away at 8:25 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14, 2011 at his residence. Born June 16, 1933 in Clinton, Ohio, he was a son of Charles E. and Margaret E. (Carr) Williams.
He lived in Carrollton, Ohio until 1956 and Fort Wayne from 1956-1993 before moving to Columbia City. He graduated from Clinton High School with the Class of 1951, Clinton, Ohio and attended Indiana Tech.
Deborah K. Killian, 54, of Columbia City, passed away at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011 at her residence on Crooked Lake. Born July 19, 1956 in Lebanon, Ind., she was a daughter of William E. Zollars and Ruth A. (Greeson) Remley.
