Whitko boys win TRC

WABASH — Whitko’s boys track team left the Three Rivers Conference meet as champions for the sixth year in a row Thursday night at Southwood.

The Wildcats edged second-place Rochester by five points, 117-112, to take home the title.

Whitko was led by a stellar performance from Connor Stouder, who tallied 30 points with three first-place finishes.

Stouder won the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. He was also the last leg of the winning 1,600-meter relay team. Also on the 1,600 relay was Brady Herendeen Tyler Sherwin and Kuyler Bailey.

WHITLEY COUNTY — “That smell is something you never forget.”

Tom Strack, 64, made a gruesome discovery Wednesday night after he caught wind of an all-too-familiar odor from his past.

Strack, who served his country in Vietnam more than 40 years ago, picked up on the smell of a dead body in his woods Wednesday night.

“It is its own odor,” Strack said. “I recognized it right away.”

Strack, who lives on County Road 800 East north of Old Trail Road, was walking home from his mom’s house on Johnson Road through the trails in his woods.

JUST IN: Victim I.D.’d

WHITLEY COUNTY, Ind. — Whitley County’s Coroner identified the body of a man who was found in a wooded area in Whitley County Wednesday night.

The man has been identified as Dillon Travis Warner, of Fort Wayne.

Coroner Randy Dellinger said the cause and manner of death are uncertain, pending complete autopsy results.

Softball sectional pairings announced

The IHSAA announced the sectional brackets for softball this morning.

Columbia City drew Carroll for their fist game in the Class 4A Sectional 5 at DeKalb.

Whitko will play Bellmont in the first round of Class 3A Sectional 23 at Norwell.

Churubusco has been paired up with Bishop Luers in the Class 2A Sectional 36 at Eastside.

Rongos makes college choice

CONFERENCE, COUNTY CHAMPS: Girls track wins third straight NHMLC

NEW HAVEN — Indian Springs Middle School’s girls track team won its third straight Northeast Hoosier Middle Level Conference Title.

ISMS’s boys squad placed third behind Carroll and Maple Creek.

The event was held at New Haven Saturday, and both teams will travel to Plymouth to compete in the NLMSC conference meet.

New Haven’s event had several teams, including DeKalb, Bellmont, Summit, East Noble, Woodside and Norwell, along with Carroll, Maple Creek, New Haven and ISMS.

Lakeland girls tennis drops Churubusco, 4-1

LA GRANGE — Churubusco’s girls tennis team fell on the road to NECC foe Lakeland.

The Lady Lakers beat the Lady Eagles, 4-1 in varsity action and 4-1 in junior varsity action as well.

Picking up the win for the Lady Eagles at the varsity level was Kayleen Mitchell at No. 3 singles, defeating Amanda Miller 6-2, 7-5.

Losing in No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, were Churubusco’s Cheyenne Conner and Audrey Gierscher, who both lost in straight sets to Carlee Richardson and Audrey Stephens.

Whitko drops TRC contest

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team lost its second game in a row to a Three Rivers Conference opponent Wednesday.

The Wildcats fell to visiting Wabash, 9-2. The Apaches have now won four in a row.

In the defeat, Whitko is now 15-7 for the season and 2-3 overall in conference play.

Wabash built up a 5-1 lead after three, then added two more in the fourth inning and two more in the sixth. Whitko got its second run in the bottom of the sixth frame.

Ethan Nicodemus was tagged with the loss for the Wildcats on the mound.

Big fifth inning keys Lady Eagles

CHURUBUSCO — It all came at once for Churubusco’s softball team.

A big fifth inning for the Lady Eagles keyed them to victory Wednesday against Eastside. ‘Busco won, 6-3.

The Lady Eagles scored all six of their runs of the contest in the fifth inning. After that, the game was 6-0 in their favor.

Eastside chipped away, scoring two in the sixth and one in the seventh, but it was not enough to take away the lead that Churubusco had built.
