COLUMBIA CITY — Annie Morsches of Columbia City will be part of presidential history. As a member of Culver Academy’s Equestriennes, Morsches will be saddling up for a Jan. 21 ride down Pennsylvania Avenue as part of the Presidential Inaugural Parade.

NEW BABY: Whitley County welcomes first baby of the New Year

COLUMBIA CITY — The year 2013 brought one big change for a family from Whitley County. Lang Johnson and Nick Dausman of Larwill are now the parents of the first baby born in the county in 2013, their son, Cody Levi Dausman.

Cody was born on Thursday, Jan. 3 at 6:13 p.m. He was 8 pounds 4 ounces and 20.5 inches long. Cody has one sibling, his sister, Jennica, who is 7. His parents were glad to begin the new year with such joy and did not imagine that their son would be the first baby born in 2013.

WHY 'BUSCO?: Sheriff’s Dept. weighs in on dogfighting bust

COLUMBIA CITY — Saturday’s dog-fighting bust has left many local residents asking the same question, “Why did those people come to Churubusco?”

Most of the 18 people arrested weren’t from Whitley County. In fact, 13 were from out of state. Most of the arrested came from the Gary-Chicago area, along with several from Michigan.

Brice said typically, dog-fighting rings publish underground magazines, e-mail and text message each other to get the word out about what they call a “dog show.” Saturday night’s show just happened to be hosted in Churubusco.

GUN PERMITS: Applications for permits are still on the rise

COLUMBIA CITY — Gun permit applications are still on the rise in Whitley County, as both Columbia City’s Police Department and the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department tripled their applications in December.

In December 2011, the WCSD had 29 total gun permit applications. In December 2012, after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the department has completed 93 applications.

Though the shooting has stirred talks of gun control laws, WCSD Chief Deputy Marc Gatton said he doesn’t think citizens need to fear any immediate restrictions.

Sue Jarvis, 71

Sue C. (Ford) Jarvis, age 71, of Columbia City, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
Born April 14, 1941, in Albany, she was the daughter of the late Garnet R. and Donna L. (Hammitt) Ford.
She graduated from Arcola High School, Arcola, with the Class of 1959. She retired from Verizon (previously GTE and General Telephone) after 47 years of service. She was a dedicated member of IBEW Local 723.

Richard Johnson, 81

Richard H. “Dick” Johnson, 81, of South Whitley, died at 5:33 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013 at Lutheran Hospital, Fort Wayne where he was admitted Monday following a stroke.
He was born Sept. 25, 1931 in Speedway, a son of K. Harold and Mary P. (Phillips) Johnson.
At the age of five, the family moved to South Whitley. He graduated from South Whitley High School in 1949.

Patricia Gates, 80

Patricia Joy Gates, 80, of Columbia City, passed away Wednesday Jan. 2, 2013, at University Park Health and Rehabilitation Center in Fort Wayne.
She was born Feb. 1, 1932, in Whitley County, to the late Carl and Loretta (Armel) Bridegam.
Patricia graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1950. She retired from Parkview Whitley Hospital where she worked in the cafeteria. She was also a member of the Whitley County Home Demonstration Club and Tri-Lakes Baptist Church.

Helen Potter, 92

January 4, 2013

Helen M. (Deck) Potter, 92, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2013, at The Oaks in Columbia City. She was born Nov. 21, 1920, in Fort Wayne.
Helen was a homemaker that loved caring for her family. She loved playing the piano and singing.
Helen was a member of Salvation Army Church and a life member of the D.A.V. Women’s Auxiliary.
