County makes payment to Wood-Land-Lakes

COLUMBIA CITY — Wood-Land-Lakes, a nonprofit group working across several counties in the state, had a request for funds approved by the Whitley County Commissioners Monday.

The commissioners approved $400 for the group. Stanley Crum, a board member for Wood-Land-Lakes, was on hand, and told commissioners all his organization does, how they are trying to stay in budget, and reach out to stakeholders.

“Wood-Land-Lakes can’t disappear,” he said. “It is the holder of almost 10,000 acres of agriculture preservation land easements.”

The decision unanimously passed.

OPERATION GUARDIAN: Marshals nab local offender

COLUMBIA CITY — A federal sweep put a Whitley County man in jail for failing to register as a sex offender.

DeWayne Stewart was convicted in 2004 of sexual misconduct with a 15-year-old and child seduction and did not register, adding him to a list of targets, along with hundreds of other fugitives nationwide.

The U.S. Marshals Service arrested Stewart in Huntsville, Ala., officials said in a press release.

Another area man, Mark Lautzenheiser, a convicted rapist from DeKalb County, was also arrested for failing to register as a sex offender and violating his parole.

TOP OF THE CLASS: Frantz, Wheeler garner Valedictorian, Salutatorian at WHS

SOUTH WHITLEY — Achievement runs in the family for both Holly Frantz and Stephanie Wheeler, seniors at Whitko High School.

Frantz, the daughter of Mark and Julie Frantz, was named WHS’s valedictorian. She said her parents were honored with the second place spot in their graduating classes.

“They were salutatorians, so I broke the streak,” Frantz said. “I decided it was something I wanted to go for early on. It wasn’t really until a couple of months ago that I realized I was going to come in first.”

Wheeler, the daughter of Michael and Amber Wheeler, was named WHS’s salutatorian.

COLUMBIA CITY — To renovate or not to renovate?

That was the question for the Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of School Trustees (WCCS) Monday. Business Manager Tony Zickgraf shared with the board the bidding information he had received to do work on the storm sewer at Columbia City High School (CCHS). There were a couple of problems, however.

HEAD OF SPORTS: ’Busco names new AD

CHURUBUSCO — Smith-Green Community Schools Board of School Trustees named a new athletic director, beginning in the 2013-14 school year.

Jeremy Dexter, currently at Eastern High School in Greentown, will take the reins as athletic and extracurricular director for Churubusco Junior-Senior High School effective Aug. 1.

The decision was made official by the school board at a special meeting Monday night.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT: Whitley Co. companies to create new jobs

COLUMBIA CITY — Economic development was on tap Tuesday for the Whitley County Council.

The council approved two 10-year tax abatements for a pair of businesses in the county.

Red Star and ChromaSource were the businesses that received the abatements. Both approvals were unanimous by the council.

ChromaSource plans to invest in new equipment that will add up to 12 new jobs for the company by 2014.

CEO Jason Brooks said the company is one of just three like it in North America. He said they are very busy at present.

Lions down ’Busco

CHURUBUSCO — Despite taking a 7-5 advantage in the first inning, Churubusco’s softball team dropped a 19-9 game against Leo Monday night in Churubusco.

Both teams came out with hot bats in the first frame, as Leo opened the game with five runs and the Lady Eagles answered with seven of their own.

The second frame was a different story, as neither team scored.
Leo began to chip away at ’Busco’s lead in the third inning, outscoring the Lady Eagles 3-2.

The Lady Lions tied the score at nine in the fourth stanza, but tore the game open in the fifth and sixth innings.

’Cats top TRC foes

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s boys track team won a three-way meet against Three Rivers Conference opponents Tippecanoe Valley and North Miami Monday night.

The Wildcats earned 83 points, Tippy Valley came in second with 55 and North Miami had 28 points.

Whitko had 10 first-place finishes. Connor Stouder and Tyler Sherwin each had two wins for the Wildcats.

Stouder placed first in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Sherwin won the 300-meter hurdles and the discus with a toss of 120 feet, 7 inches.
Connor Zwick took second in the discus.

Col. City golf topped by 2 strokes

FORT WAYNE — In a match that was made up after a rain postponement earlier in the season, the Columbia City Eagles golf team traveled the short distance to take on the Canterbury Cavaliers at Chestnut Hills Golf Course Monday night.

The Eagles lost a close match, 161-163.

“This was a good match,” Columbia City Head Coach Andrew Thompson said. “This is a tough course and we handled it well, but it just wasn’t quite enough.

Columbia City freshman Spencer Klimek led the way for the Eagles, carding a 38 on the par 36 course.

Norsemen handle ’Cats, 9-0

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s baseball team, which went into Monday night’s game with a 15-5 record, dropped a Three Rivers Conference match-up by a difficult, 9-0 score.

The Wildcats hosted Northfield, a team that won the state finals last year and returned several of its starters from last season.

The Norsemen jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and scored three more runs in the top of the third frame.

Whitko managed to hold Northfield’s offense off home plate for much of the rest of the game, excluding another run in the sixth inning to make the 9-0 score.
