PART-TIME OFFICER: ’Busco council adds SRO

CHURUBUSCO – Chad Fulkerson, Churubusco police officer and 19-year law enforcement veteran, was officially named Smith-Green Community School’s full-time school resource officer (SRO) Wednesday evening during Churbusco’s Town Council meeting.

“He’s been a part of the town’s police force for a long time,” said Churubusco Town Marshal Mike Engle, “and he’s a great guy.”
Having been previously employed as a part-time SRO at Smith-Green, Fulkerson will continue his position for the remainder of the 2014-2015 school year.

Ramona Lynn Wood, 62

Ramona Lynn (Gradeless) Wood lost her battle with cancer Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015, at the age of 62. She was born in Moses Lake, Wash., Sept. 8, 1952.
She graduated from Columbia City High School in 1970. Lynn worked for Verizon, formerly GTE, for 25 years before retiring. She moved to Fort Wayne in 1992.
She is preceded in death by her father, Robert Russell Gradeless, Sr.; step-father Robert Cooper; and brothers, Roger and Larry Cooper.

Barbara Sue Hoke, 60

Barbara Sue Hoke, 60, of Columbia City, passed away at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at her home. Born May 28, 1954 in Goshen, she was the daughter of Melvin G. and Joann A. (Detwiler) Huber.
After graduating from Goshen High School with the Class of 1972, Barbara attended Ball State University.
On May 28, 1977, she married Robert Hoke in Goshen. They moved to Columbia City from Goshen in 1986. She worked at Coesse Elementary for 10 years, Kroger Deli and Rest Care, assisting clients before retiring in 2002.

Jean Jagger, 62

Jean Jagger, 62, of Columbia City, passed away at 2:50 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015 at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Born Jan. 20, 1953 in Whitley County, she was the daughter of Robert E. and Riola F. (Taylor) VanWey.
Jean graduated from Columbia City Joint High School with the Class of 1971 and graduated from Four Winds Academy with the Class of 1972. She had been a hairstylist since graduating from Four Winds and currently was at Shear Envy. Jean enjoyed going out with friends, playing cards and golfing.

Norma M. Schroeder, 85

Norma M. Schroeder, 85, of Columbia City, died at 5:39 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne where she had been admitted Monday.
She was born Sept. 15, 1929 in Whitley County, a daughter of Forest W. and Alice Catherine (Londt) Fowler. A lifelong Whitley County resident, she graduated from Jefferson Center High School and received her nurses training at St. Joe Hospital.

Bertha Haywood, 84

Bertha (Richardson) Haywood, 84, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2015 at 1:52 a.m. in Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. She was born Aug. 27, 1930 in London, Ohio, the sixth child of Elza and Lillie (Whitaker) Richardson.
On Sept. 28, 1947 she was united in marriage to Calvin Haywood, the son of Jobe and Grace Haywood, of Prestonsburg, Ky. Calvin preceded Bertha June 24, 1997 after serving as a Baptist Deacon for over 20 years.

WILDCATS DOWN: ’Busco tops Whitko in close match, 39-32

CHURUBUSCO — Host Churubusco and visiting Whitley County rival Whitko split the 14 bouts in Thursday night’s Senior Night matchup right down the middle, with each taking seven wins.

The difference came in the premium points awarded for pinfalls.
The Eagles scored five pinfall wins with the Wildcats picking up two pins, as the host Eagles gave Coach Sam Reisen his 100th career dual meet victory, 39-32.

BOSTON'S GOT TALENT: Columbia City musician to try out for national television show

COLUMBIA CITY — Trent Boston will be singing the blues this weekend — but not in a figurative sense.
The Columbia City musician will be auditioning for “America’s Got Talent,” a NBC television show that will be entering its 10th season this year.

Auditions are held in Chicago. While anyone can try out for the show, Boston received a special front-of-the-line pass from a local radio station, giving him a special advantage.

EIGHT CANDIDATES: Buchanan joins Columbia City mayor’s race

COLUMBIA CITY — The first Democrat has stepped into the ring of this year’s municipal election season.
“Richard” Dick Buchanan is set to take on incumbent Ryan Daniel (R) for the mayor’s seat. Buchanan is the lone Democrat in this year’s election so far.

Eight candidates have filed for the primary so far — four incumbents and four new face.
