Whitko soccer off and running

   The Whitko athletic department grew a little bit in the past week.
   The once Whitko soccer club became an official sport at Whitko High School Dec. 20 thanks to a request from athletic director Rob Irwin to the Whitko Community Schools board.

Park Dept. cautions Baker’s Field sledders

COLUMBIA CITY — Sledding down the hills in DeVol Field is a popular winter activity, but sledding in Baker’s Field is dangerous and off-limits, according to the Columbia City Parks Board.
“Every year we have issues with this (Baker’s Field), but what drives us crazy is they (people sledding) are not allowed to sled on the Baker’s Field side,” Parks Director Mark Green said Monday evening.
“This is dangerous because you don’t know what is under the snow and it seems once a year somebody breaks their leg. We want people to stay between the bales.”

Last boiler down: Marshall bldg. without heat this morning

COLUMBIA CITY — Employees working in the Marshall Community Building this morning were sitting at their desks in their winter coats.
The building, which houses the Whitley County Consolidated School Corporation’s district offices, has been limping along for some time with only one of its two boilers operational.
Last night, according to Business Manager Tony Zickgraf, that last boiler went down.
“They (maintenance crews) discovered it wasn’t working this morning,” said Zickgraf. “They had a part and got it on at 6 a.m. this morning. So, it is working it’s just taking awhile to warm up.”

New member appointed, officers elected to 4-H Inc. board

Former board member Dave Rupley was not reelected at the annual meeting for the Whitley County 4-H Inc. board, but will return to the board as he was appointed to replace Bob McKown at the Dec. 14 meeting held at the 4-H Center. McKown resigned from the board earlier in the year.
Officers were elected at the meeting with the following results: Bill Leeuw, president; Cathy Heritier, vice president; Dave Rupley, secretary; Kent Reese, treasurer; Julie Johnson, assistant treasurer; and Rex Eiler and Aaron McDevitt, executive board.

Christeen Seigel, 82

December 27, 2010

Christeen Seigel, 82, passed away Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010 at her Fort Wayne residence. She was born Sept. 23, 1928 in Toledo, Ohio.
Mrs. Seigel worked as a cashier for Meijer and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary 241.
Surviving are her sons, Tom Seigel of Wolcottville, Mike (Laraina) Seigel of Columbia City and Larry Seigel of Ridgeland, S.C.; grandchildren, Jeff (Jessica) Seigel, Scott (Loretta) Seigel and Sandie Sisco; great-grandchildren, Ashlyn, Abigail, Samantha and Tessa Seigel and Michelle, Nicolas and Tyler Sisco; and great-great-grandchild, Alexis Lock.

Lois Johnson, 84

Lois Jeanette Johnson, 84, of Fort Wayne and formerly of Columbia City passed away at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at Canterbury Health and Rehabilitation Center, Fort Wayne. Born Oct. 21, 1926 in Columbia City, she was a daughter of Robert Franklin and Tacy Berniece (Hill) Baker.
She graduated from Wolf Lake High School with the Class of 1945 living in Ormas and Columbia City areas, moving to Fort Wayne in 1976. She was a homemaker and a clerk for Hooks Drug Stores in Columbia City and Fort Wayne for many years.

Lady Eagles stun Cadets

   FORT WAYNE — Christmas came early for the Columbia City girls basketball team.
   The Lady Eagles broke their four-game losing streak on the road Wednesday night against Concordia (7-4), 62-55.
   “We’d been a slump in the last few games, this is a big win for us,” Columbia City Head Coach Amy Shearer said.
   With three players finishing the game in double digits, the Lady Eagles didn’t rely on one person to win the game.

’Cats smother Pilgrims 59-41

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko’s Wildcats had to turn up the pressure Wednesday night on non-conference foe Plymouth in order to put the varsity contest out of reach early en route to a decisive 59-41 win over the Pilgrims.
   It was a lesson learned from the team’s previous contest against Three Rivers Conference Tippecanoe Valley.

Erma Albert, 90

December 23, 2010

Erma I. Albert, 90, passed away at 9:05 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 in The Oaks, Columbia City.
Born Jan. 20, 1920 in Whitley County, she was a daughter of Charles M. and Pansy M. (Black) Trump.
In Columbia City, May 15, 1937, she married Ernest C. Albert. He survives.
She spent most of her life in the Pierceton area and was a housekeeper for Kosciusko Community Hospital in Warsaw for 10 years. She was also a housekeeper at Grace Village in Winona Lake for 10 years.
She was a member of the Pierceton United Methodist Church in Pierceton.

Frank Mercer, 86

Frank C. Mercer, 86, of Columbia City, died at 10:44 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010 at his home.
He was born Nov. 28, 1924 in Portsmouth, Ohio a son of Howard R. and Eunice (Hiller) Mercer. He was educated in Portsmouth and completed his education in criminology in New London, Ohio.
On April 5, 1943 he was inducted in the United States Army, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged Nov. 10, 1945.
