Richard Elmer Lohmeyer, 85, of Fort Wayne, died Thursday, Nov. 25, 2010 at Renaissance Village. Born in Fort Wayne, he was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy.
He worked at Old Crown Brewery and for the Indiana State Highway Department. He was a 50-year member of American Legion Post 98 in Columbia City and also a 50-year member of Columbia City Lodge 189, F. & A.M. and Mizpah Temple.
Keith E. “Sonny” Cleland, 82, of rural Larwill died at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 23, 2010 at Miller’s Merry Manor where he had been a resident since September.
He was born July 30, 1928 in Columbia City, a son of Carl and Ester Cleland. He spent his formative years in Columbia City and graduated from Columbia City High School.
Following his graduation, he joined the U.S. Army and served as a corporal in the Korean War.
On Feb. 14, 1959, he was united in marriage to Joyce A. Menzie. The made their home outside of Larwill.
COLUMBIA CITY — Mayor Jim Fleck told the Columbia City Common Council Tuesday that the recent Veteran’s Marathon, in its second year, should grow even more next year.
“The third year (2011) is the break out year,” said Fleck.
“An evaluation is being done to evaluate the prospect of another race. It was a valuable event. It is new, it is exciting.”
COLUMBIA CITY — A Fort Wayne man and state excise officer is free on bond after being arrested early Wednesday morning, accused of staging the break-in of an Indiana State Excise Police evidence room in Columbia City.
Aaron M. Bishop, 34, was arrested at 2:04 a.m. Wednesday, charged with theft and official misconduct.
He was booked at the Whitley County Jail on $8,000 bond and is scheduled for an initial hearing in Whitley Circuit Court Monday.
Across the country, young artists work to perfect their craft, be it painting, photography, sculpture or the art of storytelling in the written word.
For 87 years, the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers has provided a means for these budding creators to put their creations up against others their age, to see if they have what it takes.
From the turnout at the Autumn Art Festival in Columbia City each fall, and the many local artists who bring their work to the event, it is apparent that art is alive and well in Whitley County.
But where can you find local original artwork the other 51 weeks of the year?
With the opening Saturday of a new Art Gallery, called “A Gift of Art,” this question has an answer.
“(There are) so many talented artists that people never get to see,” said Jeanne Pfeiffer, owner of Sun Kiss Tanning Salon. “It’s hard for them to find a venue for people to see it.”
Paul E. Rawley, 88 of Titusville, Fla. died Saturday, Nov. 20, 2010 at his home.
He was born July 26, 1922 in New Castle, a son of Clyde and Ruby (Hamilton) Rawley.
Survivors include his wife, June (Walter) Rawley and a daughter, Camille Jo Lee.
There are no services planned at this time. Arrangements were by the National Cremation and Burial Society of Rockledge, Fla.

COLUMBIA CITY — It wasn’t the 15 lead changes, the quick 10-2 start by Columbia City or even the game-high 22 points by Whitko’s Logan Irwin that was on everyone’s mind after exiting Donald S. Weeks Gymnasium Wednesday night.
Everyone asked the question at least once. Was it a two or three?
Don York of Columbia City stopped by The Post & Mail office to show us an invitation he received in 1952 while serving in Osan, Korea for a Thanksgiving dinner more than 6,000 miles from home.
The artwork was done by one of his comrades in arms, D. W. Bennett, showing the emblem of the 840th Engineering Aviation Battalion and their location “K55” which is today the Osan AB Airport.
