Col. City beats ’Busco in rivalry match

CHURUBUSCO — In volleyball, scoring first helps, but the team that gets the final point is the winner.

Columbia City’s volleyball team put that theory to the test Tuesday in its county-rivalry win over Churubusco. ’Busco got the first point in all three sets, but it was Columbia City who walked off with the 3-0 victory.

Columbia City won by nearly-symmetrical scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18.

However, the three sets were not symmetrical. Visiting Columbia City battled back from a 12-6 hole to win the first one.

LAUNDRY DISPUTE: Col. City woman seriously injured in beating

COLUMBIA CITY — A 24-year-old Columbia City woman was severely injured after she was battered at Jellystone Campground in Pierceton over the weekend.

The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was taken to a hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition after a confrontation about laundry at the campgrounds.

According to a press release by the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, the woman got in a dispute with Patrick Zimny, 54, of Glenwood, Ill., about use of a clothes dryer unit.

IN COURT: Norris sentenced for escape attempt

COLUMBIA CITY — A Cromwell man who attempted to escape from the Whitley County Jail last year received a 12-year prison sentence Monday.

Charles E. Norris, 29, will serve eight of the 12 years at the Indiana Department of Corrections (DOC) and will have four suspended for attempted escape.

Norris received a concurrent eight-year sentence, with all to serve at DOC, for intimidation.

CRASH: Two injured in motorcycle accident

WHITLEY COUNTY — Two people were injured in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on Ind. 205 Monday night. A 55-year-old man from Kendallville and his passenger, a 41-year-old woman from Wolcottville, were transported to a hospital in Fort Wayne by Whitley County EMS.

A approximately 10 p.m., the riders' 1986 Honda F70 was northbound on Ind. 205, just north of CR 300 North when the motorcycle left the right side of the roadway and crashed into a ditch, throwing both the driver and passenger from the vehicle.

Doyle Sweeney, 96

Doyle G. Sweeney, 96, of Sebring, Fla., passed away, Aug. 28, 2013, in Coldwater, Mich.
Doyle was born in Columbia City, son of the late Perry and Beulah (Sellers) Sweeney.
Prior to moving to Sebring he was a fruit and vegetable inspector for northern Indiana.
In 1957, Doyle moved to Sebring and he and his late wife Jean, developed Sweeney’s Mobile Home Park and he also owned Sweeney’s Aluminum Products.
Doyle joined the Elks in 1946 in Whitley County, and is a past exhaulted ruler of Sebring Elks Lodge and past district deputy of the South Florida Elks.

Evelyn L. Stangland, 76

Evelyn L. Stangland, 76, a resident of rural Albion and widow of Rex E. Stangland, passed away Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at her home in Noble Township following an extended illness.
Mrs. Stangland was born Nov. 4, 1936, in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Franklin and Annetta (McNeal) Gaff. She spent her formative years in York Township in Noble County and graduated from Albion High School in 1954.

Devona Berg, 80

September 3, 2013

Devona J. Berg, 80, of Big Lake, passed away at 10:50 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013, at Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne. Born Aug. 24, 1933, in Etna Troy Township, she was the daughter of Chester K. Myers and Ruth (Shaffer) Myers-Hurd.
She is a lifetime resident of Whitley County and graduated from Columbia City High School with the Class of 1951. On Aug. 7, 1971, she married James C. Berg in Columbia City.
She worked at Bond Flex Rubber, Columbia City, with 15 years of service. Devona enjoyed collecting crystal figurines in her free time.

John Gamble, 65

John Lee Gamble, 65, of Fort Wayne, and formerly of Churubusco, passed away at his home Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013.
He was born Oct. 28, 1947, a son of Doyle Gamble and Margery (Huntley) Heald, and a grandson of Cecil and Mae Huntley Sr.
Mr. Gamble served in U.S. Marine Corps and was a lifetime employee of Northern Indiana Public Service Company.

Terry Hammel, 68

September 3, 2013

Terry Alan Hammel, 68, Jacksonville, Fla., and formerly of Huntington, passed away Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at 10:50 p.m. at the Haven Hospice in Orange, Fla.
Mr. Hammel was born May 23, 1945, in Huntington, to Meredith Luther and Marion Jean Steele Hammel.
His mother survives and resides in Huntington. His father preceded him in death on July 1, 2004. Mr. Hammel married Connie Rae Reckard Aug. 13, 1965 in Huntington. She survives and resides in Florida.

Linda Hutton-Reiling, 65

September 3, 2013

Linda S. Hutton-Reiling, 65, of Churubusco, passed away at 9:56 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, at Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home, Fort Wayne, after a courageous battle with cancer and with her loving family surrounding her.
Born Jan. 12, 1948, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Alfred S. and Eileen V. (Holmes) Hutton-Rennecker.
