SOUTH WHITLEY ‚ÄĒ According to Whitko boys varsity soccer coach Jason Ehrman, it takes a series of steps in order to reach your goal.
Following his team‚Äôs loss to Lakeland Christian Academy Saturday, 4-1, he told his team the same thing.
Ehrman said the ‚ÄėCats did everything he asked of them except for putting the ball in the net.
‚ÄúWe are much further along, and to be honest, I didn‚Äôt think we could play and possess the ball the way we did,‚ÄĚ said Ehrman.
CHURUBUSCO ‚ÄĒ Churubusco‚Äôs volleyball team fell in pool play at its own tournament Saturday.
The Lady Eagles fell to Lakewood Park, 25-21, 25-18, lost to Shenandoah 16-25, 25-10 and 25-12 and were defeated by eventual-tournament winner Mishawaka, 25-17, 25-20.
Mishawaka defeated the winner of the other pool, Northridge, in a sweep for the tournament championship.
Whitley County‚Äôs Youth Council gathered for its first meeting Tuesday.
The group of students work with Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel along with other community leaders to learn leadership and to offer suggestions and ideas on bettering Whitley County.
Approximately 10 students serve on the council during the school year.
LARWILL ‚ÄĒ In its 159th annual event, Squawbuck Days was held in Larwill Friday through Sunday.
The three-day event was sponsored by the Larwill Firemen, Lions Club and the Richland Township Community Association, and was a joint fundraiser to raise money for the community.
Festivities began Friday with a tenderlion dinner at the town‚Äôs fire department. The Larwill Lions Club hosted a night of bingo.
Saturday, a breakfast was held from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and visitors were able to purchase crafts, take in a flea market and venture out to several garage sales in town.
FREMONT‚ÄĒ Quick thinking and needed medical equipment helped save a person‚Äôs life before Churubusco‚Äôs football game Friday night at Fremont.
Dave Crabill, a Whitley County media member and a long-time Eagle football supporter, according to Coach Paul Sade, collapsed on the sidelines during warm-ups.
Whitley County Commissioner Don Amber, who is a former paramedic, was at the game, and when he realized what happened, he went down from the stands to assist, along with Whitley County Sheriff Chief Deputy Marcus Gatton.
HUNTINGTON ‚ÄĒ Columbia City‚Äôs girls team, paced by a fifth-place performance by Samantha Roush, came in 10th overall at the Huntington Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday.
There were 15 complete teams in the girls‚Äô meet. Columbia City Cross Country Head Coach Bob Fahl said it was a great step for his squad.
‚ÄúAll of the girls improved their times from the non-scoring meet held last Tuesday at DeKalb,‚ÄĚ he said.
COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ Columbia City senior football captain Sam Dailey remained in critical condition throughout the weekend after a head injury Friday night.
Dailey was hurt while trying to make a tackle against Warsaw in the season-opening football game.
‚ÄúHe made an outstanding play on a run off-tackle,‚ÄĚ Columbia City Randy Hudgins told an area newspaper. ‚ÄúWe watched it on film and it didn‚Äôt look like anything out of the ordinary, but it must have hit him just the right way.‚ÄĚ
WHITLEY COUNTY ‚ÄĒ There may be many fish in the sea, but Jeff Melvin caught one that many fishermen will never see in their lifetime.
Melvin, of rural Whitley County, hooked a 15-foot, 900-pound largetooth sawfish shark during a fishing trip in Florida April 29.
An endangered species, Melvin only had a few seconds to snap some photos, measure, and release his catch back into the wild. By law, he couldn‚Äôt take the shark out of the water.
‚ÄúI couldn‚Äôt get the whole shark in the photo ‚ÄĒ he was so big,‚ÄĚ Melvin said.
COLUMBIA CITY ‚ÄĒ Minor injuries were sustained in a rollover crash on Ind. 205, south of Columbia City Saturday night.
Officers on the scene said the driver had minor cuts on his hand. The name of the driver is not currently available.
