DENVER — Whitko’s wrestling team competed in the Three Rivers Conference Wrestling Tournament Saturday morning at North Miami Junior-Senior High School. The Wildcats finished sixth with 150.5 points.

Whitko’s Lane Wolf took the 120-pound weight class championship after entering the tournament unseeded.

“I thought our guys wrestled extremely well,” said Whitko head coach Frank Bumgardner. “They wrestled hard and showed improvement, that’s what we’ve been working on the last couple weeks.”

Whitko was comparatively short-handed, having wrestlers in 11 of the 14 weight classes.

DONNA ROSE: Whitko athletics loses a devotee

January 21, 2013

SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko basketball lost a long-time, avid supporter Saturday.

The Wildcats’ gymnasium seemed oddly quiet to many Whitko fans without the presence of Donna Rose, who died in a single-vehicle crash, just hours before the boys basketball game against West Noble.

Rose, 73, was in the crowd the night before, Friday, as she has been for nearly every Whitko home game for decades.

According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Rose was killed after her vehicle struck a tree near County Roads 500 South and 800 West at approximately 2:44 p.m. Saturday.

“We were keeping them on up to Jan. 15,” she said.
