COLUMBIA CITY â€” War was waged at Eagle Tech Academy Friday â€” a cooking war, that is.
Sophomore Spanish students at ETA participated in a cooking competition that not only brought out creative dishes, but creative learning as well.
Seventeen teams fought for the honor of â€śTop Chef.â€ť Several of the classrooms were converted into mini, make-shift eateries, as students prepared and served dishes from Spanish-speaking countries.
CHURUBUSCO â€” Out of 39 applicants participating in the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship selection process, Chandler Brown, a senior at Churubusco Junior-Senior High School, was awarded the honor.Chandler is the son of Doug and Larisa Brown, and the older brother of Seth.
As the endowmentâ€™s recipient, Chandler receives full tuition to the Indiana college of his choice and a $900 yearly stipend for required books and equipment.His college of choice â€” Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s softball team traveled to Whitko Friday evening to pick up its first win of the season â€” in prime fashion â€” with an 18-1 win.
After a scoreless first inning, the Lady Eagles tacked on three runs in the second frame.
Columbia City scored six more in the third, and nine in the fifth and final inning to make the score 18-1 with 13 hits.
â€śWe finally hit the ball like we wanted,â€ť Columbia City Head Coach Steve Cox said.
Winning pitcher Krysten Van Houten had nine strike-outs with no walks.
WARSAW â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s varsity baseball team was finally able to take to the diamond after three cancelled games due to weather.
While the weather held off for the Eaglesâ€™ Friday night game at Warsaw, conditions were not ideal, as temperatures were low and drizzle fell throughout the evening.
Both teams had to deal with the cold, but Columbia City managed to win a close game over the Tigers, 5-4.
The Eagleâ€™s opening night starting pitcher, Jordan Bickle, took a no-hit bid into the fifth inning while on his way to earning the win.
SOUTH WHITLEY â€” In a county-rivalry game against Churubusco, Whitko defeated the Eagles 10-6.
The Wildcats advance to 5-1 on the season while Churubusco drops to 2-3.
Alex Stoddard led Whitko with 4-for-4 batting, scoring three runs with an RBI.
â€śStoddard was huge out of the lead-off spot, reaching base all five times,â€ť Whitko Head Coach Erik Hisner said. â€śWe had a lot of guys to a lot of little things tonight to help us earn this victory.â€ť
TERRE HAUTE (AP) â€” A Connecticut man died and his girlfriend was seriously injured when they were compacted inside a garbage truck after spending the night in a trash bin, police said.
Police responding to a 911 call early Thursday found the body of 46-year-old Franschon Barr in the rear of the garbage truck near a Terre Haute hotel.
SUMMITTVILLE (AP) â€” A prosecutor said Friday that an Indiana barn where investigators found starving animals living on top of more than 100 rotting carcasses was the worst case of animal cruelty he has seen, while one of the owners maintains that the conditions have been exaggerated.
No charges have been filed against the owners, but Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings said "many counts of animal cruelty are a possibility."
Terry L. Pritchard, 64, of Columbia City, died at 2:40 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2013, at his home after a two-week-long battle with cancer.
He was born April 12, 1949, in Wolf Lake, the only child of Harry R. and Betty I. (Thompson) Pritchard.
His formative years were spent in Richland Township. He graduated from Larwill High School.
He was employed at Weatherhead, North American Van Lines for more than 24 years and Auto Zone.
His memberships included Sons of the American Legion, Eagles #1906 and ABATE of Indiana.
Elbert Verlin â€śRichâ€ť Richard, 92, passed into his Heavenly rest Monday, April 8, 2013, at his home in Phoenix, Ariz. He was born May 12, 1920, on a farm in Cleveland Township, the second son of Robert Douglas and Rose Ellen (Trout) Richard. He graduated from Columbia City High School in 1938.
Rich married his high school sweetheart, Anna Marie Walter in 1940. Together they have a son, Marc, and a daughter, Rozanne.
