Vivian Louise Fidler, 89, a resident of rural Churubusco for the last 28 years, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 at Kingston Care Center in Fort Wayne.
Born Dec. 20, 1921 in Conneaut, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Albert Burr and Mary Elizabeth (Connell) Bruner. She was united in marriage to Theo â€śJackâ€ť Fidler, and he preceded her in death in 2000.
Survivors include her daughter, Jacklyn L. Norris; a son, Robert Fidler; and a brother, Melvin Bruner.
James S. Briggs, 96, formerly of Columbia City, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2010 in Dayton, Ohio. He had been a resident of Bethany Village Retirement in Dayton.
He was born Feb. 21, 1914 in Smith Township, a son of Roland Earl and Mable (Stemen) Briggs. He attended Collins School and graduated from Columbia City High School.
On Oct. 24, 1936 he was united in marriage to Crystal Bonetha Larue. They made their home in Columbia City for many years. They resided in Arizona for many years during their retirement. Mrs. Briggs died March 23, 2002.
William Dale Frederick, 83, Rapid City, S.D. died Monday, Jan. 3, 2011 at Golden Livingcenter in Bella Vista, S.D. He served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged and was married to Mary Delores Frederick who preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughters, Patricia Puckett and Jacqueline Roe.
Maryann A. Brenkus, 99, a resident of rural LaOtto, died Saturday, Jan. 1, 2011 in the Millers Merry Manor Nursing Center in Garrett.
She was born in Fort Wayne, a daughter of the late Herbert and Anna (Lweue) Reiling. She was married to Jule Jeanmougin, who preceded her in death and later married to Al Brenkus who also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughter, Joan Ostermeier and a sister, Dorothy Redwinski.
Honoring Maryannâ€™s wishes, there will be no calling hours or services. Disposition of the ashes will take place at a later date.
Phyllis Louisa Barber, age 81, a former resident of Hobson Road in Fort Wayne died Saturday morning, Jan. 1, 2011 in the Glenbrook Rehabilitation Center.
Born April 6, 1929 in Fort Wayne, she was a daughter of the late Phil and Martha (Brown) Barber.
A service will be held at 2:20 p.m. today in the Chapel inside Lindenwood Cemetery in Fort Wayne. The family will receive friends at 2 p.m.
Gloria A. Ruckman, 77, of Churubusco, passed away at 6 p.m. Dec. 30, 2010 at The Oaks, Columbia City. Born Oct. 29, 1933 in Huntington County, she was a daughter of Ernest and Helen (Allen) Routt.
She has been a resident of Whitley County, since 1951. She attended Arcola High School. On Dec. 25, 1951, she married Duane E. Ruckman. While Mrs. Ruckman worked for nine years at Dana Churubusco, she spent most of her working years raising her four children and 10 grandchildren. She was an active member of the Jehovahâ€™s Witnesses Congregation of Columbia City.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Columbia Cityâ€™s police officers stay protected due to upgrades made possible by state law and federal funding.
Columbia City Chief of Police Mike Petersen told the Columbia City Common Council last month that a new shipment of ballistic vests had arrived in his department.
â€śWe got 10 vests from the federal governmentâ€™s 50/50 matchâ€ť said Petersen. â€śState law requires you to supply vests and replace them every five years.â€ť
Petersen said the State of Indiana intervened in recent years to reinforce a â€śvest life expectancyâ€ť provided by the makers of the equipment.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Police in Columbia City are investigating the death of a five-month-old baby girl Monday morning at 730 Camden Drive.
Neighbors heard a woman screaming and called 911. According to the Columbia City Police Department dispatchers, the call came in around 9:15 a.m.
According to Columbia City Chief of Police Mike Petersen, a decision on whether or not to file charges in the case is â€śpending the report on cause of death.â€ť
An autopsy was being conducted Monday afternoon. Results were not available at press time.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” A Fort Wayne man received eight years in jail for drug offenses while a Syracuse man received a suspended 18-month prison sentence for a drug-related incident surrounding the death of a woman last year.
Jeremy R. Church, 25, of Fort Wayne received a pair of eight-year sentences for dealing in cocaine and dealing in a controlled substance.
Both charges are B felonies.
Church was sentenced in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday and could be released in six years since two years of his eight-year sentences were suspended.
Judith Diane Clark, 70, of Columbia City, died at 9:40 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, 2010 at her home.
She was born Jan. 27, 1940 in Council Bluffs, Iowa, a daughter of Harwood Calvin and Helen Louise (Wood) McKain. Her formative years were spent in Council Bluffs, where she graduated from high school.
From 1959 until 1961 she served in the United States Navy.
