Austin Lewis Hodson, 89, of Columbia City, Ind. passed away unexpectedly Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 at Stringfellow Hospital in Anniston, Ala. while visiting family. Born April 10, 1921 in Whitley County, he was a son of Loren F. and Phylena (Brubaker) Hodson.
Everett C. Targgart, 80, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:10 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 at Millerâ€™s Merry Manor Inc., Columbia City. Born July 13, 1930 in Noble County, he was a son of Dewey and Myrta (Winebrenner) Targgart.
He was raised in Noble County near Burr Oak and Merriam. After his marriage to Donna Holbrook June 25, 1954 they moved to Columbia City for two years. In 1956 they moved to Noble County and lived there until 1969 when they moved back to Columbia City and have lived there since. He graduated from Wolf Lake High School with the Class of 1948.
Effie Joan Behrens, 92, went to be with her Lord and Savior Saturday, December 11, 2010 at the Towne House Health Center in Fort Wayne. She was born Feb. 25, 1918 in Fort Wayne, a daughter of Thomas D. and Pamela J. Roberts. She was a graduate of South Side High School in Fort Wayne. On Dec. 21, 1935 she married Dr. Otto K. Behrens. During their early married years together they lived in Washington, D.C., Oxford, England and New York City, N.Y. In 1940 they moved to Indianapolis where she lived until moving to Fort Wayne in the fall of 2008.
Marilyn E. Frazier, 73, a resident of Churubusco in Allen County died Wednesday Dec. 29, 2010 in the Visiting Nurse Service and Hospice Home in Fort Wayne.
Born Dec. 2, 1937 in rural Churubusco Allen County, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur and Evelyn (DeWitt) Eytcheson.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth L. Frazier; their daughters, Melody Gingery and Monica Frazier; and a sister, Doris Jones.
Harold A. Krider, 63, of Whitley County, died at 4:05 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010 at his home. He had been in failing health.
He was born March 7, 1947 in Wolf Lake, a son of George W. and Mildred M. (Hill) Krider. His formative years were spent in Thorncreek Township. He graduated from Columbia City Joint High School in 1965.
On May 21, 1966 he was united in marriage to Jo Ellen Vogely. They made their home in Columbia City and later on a farm in Columbia Township before moving to Washington Township, residing at their present home since July 2007.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” After 27 years of benefiting important community needs in Columbia City and Whitley County, the John and Hester Adams Trust is terminating. The Trustâ€™s final two grants, distributed Dec. 21, were $20,000 to the City of Columbia Cityâ€™s Park Board and $4,500 to the Whitley County Historical Society. All of the money in the trust has been disbursed. There are no more funds.
In the 27 years of its existence, the Trust awarded more than $2 million in grants to diverse nonprofit organizations.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” The Whitley County Consolidated School Corporationâ€™s Board of School Trustees will convene tonight in its first meeting of 2011.
On the agenda for tonightâ€™s meeting will be a passel of tasks to set up the upcoming year.
The 7 p.m. meeting will be the first with newly-elected member Christopher Bechtold, who won the Columbia City District seat vacated by Nicki Baker, who decided not to run for another term.
Bechtold was the second highest vote getter in that district behind board president Don Armstrong who held onto his seat for another term.
