AT-LARGE COUNCIL SEAT: Jorell Tucker throws hat in ring

SOUTH WHITLEY – South Whitley resident Jorell Tucker has announced his candidacy for Whitley County Council At-Large.

“I am excited to bring a fresh perspective to the council and advocate for continued economic development and cost savings for the taxpayers of Whitley County,” Tucker said.

Tucker has been the director of the Whitley County Solid Waste District since 2006, where he oversees the operations of the county’s recycling and conservation programs.

STATE TESTING: County third-graders prep for IREAD

COLUMBIA CITY — The Indiana State Department of Education now requires third graders to take the Indiana Reading Evaluation And Determination (I-READ3) test. This is the first year Indiana third graders have been faced with I-READ3, and they are specifically required to pass it before proceeding to fourth grade reading instruction.

If a student fails I-READ3, a window of remediation opens, and students are given the opportunity to take it again over the summer. If a third grader fails the test a second time, they cannot continue to fourth grade reading.

EMPTINESS DOWNTOWN: South Whitley addresses empty buildings

SOUTH WHITLEY — Empty buildings in the heart of South Whitley continues to be a concern for South Whitley Town Council members as Town Attorney Greg Hockemeyer addressed the board regarding issues of blight in downtown areas.

Hockemeyer gave the board information this week on the Redevelopment Commission which is responsible for developing plans and managing tools used to address conditions of blight and underutilized land of economic significance (economic development areas).

Severe storms move into southwest Indiana

Severe storms are moving into Indiana as the National Weather Service issues tornado warnings in the southwestern part of the state.

Posey County Sheriff Greg Oeth says a powerful storm damaged a house and several other structures near Wadesville about 1:45 p.m. Friday. No injuries were reported.

Sheriff's deputies reported several funnel clouds aloft, but Oath says officials believe the damage was from strong straight-line winds.

WFIE-TV in Evansville says weather spotters reported tennis ball-sized hail in the area.

Col. City’s Wilz signs with Indiana Tech

COLUMBIA CITY — Head Coach of the Indiana Tech Soccer Team David Bokhart has a relatively experienced team coming back for another year on the field in 2012.

As with all collegiate athletics however, turnover is a way of life. Bokhart was at Columbia City High School to help with that turnover.

Senior Nathan Wilz signed his letter of intent Thursday with Bokhart, his parents Joe and Kris Wilz, and Athletic Director Geoff Penrod.

CITY MAN ARRESTED IN FORT WAYNE: Suspect accused of robbing pharmacy

FORT WAYNE — A Columbia City man was arrested in Fort Wayne Thursday on charges of robbery in connection with the holdup of a Walgreens pharmacy on Wednesday.
Vincen Velez, 34, was booked in the Allen County Jail Thursday with bail set at $25,000. Velez is accused of demanding Opana from the Walgreens pharmacist at the chain store located on Jefferson Blvd. in Fort Wayne.
Police say Velez implied to the pharmacist that he was armed.

Wanda Hageman, 87

March 1, 2012

Wanda Marvine (Graves) Hageman, 87, passed away peacefully at Renaissance Village on Monday, Feb. 27, 2012.
She was born Oct. 6, 1924, in Columbia City.
Wanda graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1942.
She was a graduate of St. Joseph School of Nursing in 1947.
Wanda worked many years at St. Joseph Hospital, Fort Wayne and retired from the State of Indiana TB Clinic after 17 years of service.
Wanda married Richard (Dick) Hageman on Feb. 15, 1947.
He preceded her in passing in 2007.
Wanda and Dick raised their family in Waynedale and spent their summers at Adams Lake.

Whitko boys prep for Heritage

OSSIAN — After beating Eastbrook 66-29 Tuesday night in the first round of the IHSAA boys Class 3A sectional, Whitko faces Heritage Friday night at Norwell.

The Wildcats had three players score in double digits Tuesday, led by Logan Irwin with 27.Irwin knocked down three 3-pointers and tallied 10 points in the third quarter.

Alex Stoddard and Trey Weber had 11 points a piece. The Wildcats took a 21-9 lead in the first eight minutes.Stoddard and Weber combined for 12 of Whitko’s first-quarter points.

Churubusco’s season comes to an end; Eagles lose to Starfires, 39-34

BERNE—Thirty-nine points for Adams Central meant 100 wins for Head Coach Aaron McClure, who picked up his 100th victory in Tuesday’s sectional opener against ’Busco.

In the opening game of the South Adams Class 2A sectional, Churubusco’s deliberate, defensive-oriented style wasn’t enough to overcome the Flying Jets, who won 39-34.

The game was knotted at 30 when Central’s Maverick Baumer hit what McClure called the most important shot of the night — a 3-pointer over 6-foot-7 Eagle Tyler Arrowsmith with 2:36 on the clock.
