COLUMBIA CITY â€” While the Associated Press has reported outbreaks of whooping cough, also known as Pertussis, affecting parts of the country, Whitley County has avoided the infectious disease.
â€śWeâ€™ve not had any cases reported,â€ť said April Waugh, R.N., Immunization Nurse at the Whitley County Immunization Clinic.

Seniors Derek Hinen and Celine Rongos have both been playing tennis since they were young.
â€śWhen I was five years old, my dad started taking me out to the courts and hitting with me for fun,â€ť Rongos said. â€śAfter that, I never stopped.â€ť
Hinen said his family has played together since he was young.
Both Hinen and Rongos made Northeast Hoosier Conference All-Conference Teams last season.Rongos was also All-District, All-State Honorable Mention and named the Most Valuable Player.
Nettie Ellen Ullstrom, 90, of Fort Wayne, died at 5:40 a.m. Wednesday, August 1, 2012, at the home of her son, Jimmie, where she had been residing since April.
She was born July 5, 1922, in Myland Center, a daughter of Frank C. and Caroline (Federspiel) Chester. Her formative years were spent in Allen County.
In 1961, she was united in marriage to Leslie V. Ullstrom. They always made their home in Allen County. Mr. Ullstrom died in 1990. In 2001, Nettie moved to Deland, Fla. for eight months, then returning to Fort Wayne.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” An Illinois man first stopped in Columbia City for speeding appeared in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday on charges relating to a controlled substance.
Batbayer Tsagaan, 54, of Cicero Ill., said he was traveling from Illinois to Ohio.
According to a Whitley County Sheriff Department case report July 25, Det. Gary Archbold was asked to make the scene of a traffic stop being conducted by Officer Scott Leatherman.
The Phillies won the Pierceton Youth League minor division recently.

COLUMBIA CITY â€” Two men were arrested on methamphetamine charges Tuesday afternoon after a routine traffic stop.
According to Detective Gary Archbold, officer Jeff Chapman conducted a routine traffic stop at approximately 3 p.m., which resulted in the arrest of Jonathan Wells, 39, of Fort Wayne, and Aaron Shepherd, 19, of Columbia City.
â€śWhen Officer Chapman pulled over the vehicle, he saw a meth precursor in plain sight,â€ť Archbold said. â€śHe got permission to search the vehicle and found more precursors.â€ť
COLUMBIA CITY â€” A methamphetamine tip turned into a bomb investigation Tuesday afternoon at Ace Hardware.
The Whitley County Drug Task Force was tipped off that Lori Sample, 46, of Albion, possessed ingredients used to make meth.
â€śThe original tip was for meth precursors,â€ť Columbia City Police Capt. Tony Hively said.
While investigating the vehicle, at approximately 3:53 p.m., police found items more dangerous than meth-making materials.
â€śThere were bomb-making materials found inside the vehicle,â€ť Hively said.
