Smith takes 1st team All-NHC

FORT WAYNE — Columbia City swim senior Cole Smith won the 50-yard freestyle race Saturday, meriting a spot on the Northeast Hoosier Conference 1st team.

Smith finished with a 22:23 time, .12 seconds faster than his nearest opponent, from Bellmont.

Fellow boys teammate Tucker Daniel was also recognized by the NHC Saturday, making the Honorable Mention All-NHC team. Daniel placed eighth in both the 200 and 500-yard free events. He also competed with the 200 and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, which both placed fourth.

THEFT: Former township treasurer in court

COLUMBIA CITY – Larwill resident and former treasurer of the Union Township Fire Department Nichole Potts was in court Monday to face charges of theft, stemming from allegations that she took an estimated $28,000 from the department.

According to Fire Chief Chad Radke, Potts took over the duties of treasurer in June of 2011, when the then treasurer moved out of township.

Part of her duties were to give a monthly expense report, which Radke said were only bank totals with no beginning balances or itemized statements.

Martha Johnson, 83

ALBION — Martha Jane Johnson, 83, a resident of rural Albion and widow of Roderick C. Johnson, passed away Sunday afternoon, Jan. 9, 2012, at the home of her son in Green Township.
Although she had been in declining health, her death was unexpected.
Mrs. Johnson was born in Green Township, Noble County, on Aug. 17, 1928, a daughter of Samuel “Archie” and Clara L. (Ott) Friskney. She spent her formative years on the family farm there, and graduated from Albion High School

Bonnie Moberly, 81

Bonnie L. Moberly, 81, of Larwill, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2012, at The Oaks, Columbia City.
Born in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of the late James and Rilla Boyer.
She is survived by her loving family members and many loving friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Moberly in 2003.
Graveside service is 11 a.m. Wednesday at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, 1109 Hartzell Rd., New Haven.
Pastor Duane Kline will officiate. In lieu of flowers, preferred memorials are to the American Heart Association or Cancer services of Northeast Indiana.

NO SMOKING GUN NECESSARY: Murder definitions vary state to state

When Ralph D. Hardiek was killed Dec. 15 in a hail of gunfire from law enforcement officers, his partner, Julie Marie King, 33 was also hit and injured by the flying lead.
Late last week, DeKalb County prosecutors decided that while King did not shoot Hardiek, much less fire the fatal bullet that killed him, she was ultimately responsible for his death.

Lana McCoy, 65

Lana Lynette McCoy, 65, of Columbia City, passed away at 3:01 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, 2012, at Parkview Hospital, Fort Wayne.
She was born Jan. 7, 1947, in Fort Wayne, the daughter of William O. and Wilma J. (Roose) Harris.
Lana has spent her entire lifetime in Whitley County and graduated from Columbia City High School with the class of 1965.
She then received an associate degree from Fort Wayne Beauty College.
Her first marriage was to Larry Dean Wolfe in 1965 and her second marriage was to Jesse N. McCoy on March 27, 2000 in Chattanooga, Tenn.

GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION? Prosecutors charge Auburn woman with murder of her alleged accomplice

FORT WAYNE — Following her release from a Fort Wayne hospital Friday, an Auburn woman involved in the shooting of a Waterloo police officer has been jailed and charged with several crimes, including, apparently, the murder of her accomplice, Ralph D. Hardiek.
Julie Marie King, 33, of Auburn was charged with felony murder as well as conspiracy to commit murder and aiding in attempted murder, both Class A felonies, resulting from an incident Dec. 15 that involved the shooting of Waterloo Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady.

Myron Brown, 59

Myron C. Brown, 59, of Decatur, passed away Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
He was born May 15, 1952, in Fort Wayne to Charles E. and Ramona E. (Hine) Brown.

Marjorie Sheets, 65

January 9, 2012

Marjorie A. “Margie” Sheets, 65, of Leesburg, passed away Sunday, Jan. 8, 2012, at 1:07 a.m. in Grace Village Health Care, Winona Lake.
Margie was born May 24, 1946, in Whitley County, to Garland M. and Evelyn Rachael (Cramer) Herron.
She had lived in Leesburg for 14 years from Columbia City.
Her last place of employment was with Kosciusko Home Care and Hospice, Warsaw, where she was a caregiver for six years. Prior to that time she had been employed by Magnavox, Columbia City and Memcor, Inc., Huntington.

’Busco girls lose second game in two days

CHURUBUSCO – It usually is a good thing when a basketball team outscores their opponent from the free throw line. However, it is an unfortunate thing if that is where half your points come from. That was the case for the Churubusco Lady Eagles Saturday night in their contest with Northeast Corner Conference foe, the Hamilton Lady Marines.

The Lady Eagles managed only four field goals through the first three periods and fell to the visitors by a 45-32 score. ’Busco started well, jumping out to a 5-0 lead on two free throws by Haleigh Gross and a three pointer by Chandler Blake.
