Teen surprised with Lilly Scholarship award

COLUMBIA CITY — Not very many people can say that receiving news of an accident involving their car while parked in a parking lot could turn out to be a good thing, but Columbia City High School senior Trevor Maggart can.
As a surprise on Wednesday afternoon The Whitley County Community Foundation announced that Maggart has been named the 2011 Lilly Endowment Community Scholar from Whitley County.
The full-ride scholarship has been presented each year since 1998 to at least one Whitley County student and in addition to covering the cost of tuition includes a stipend for books.

Relocation: Teams make jump in new alignment

   INDIANAPOLIS — When the cold temperatures start to set in and fall sports are back in 2011, the postseason will have a drastically different look for much of Whitley County’s local high school teams.
   Wednesday, the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) released a new two-year sectional alignments for all of the class sports.

Wildcats put mark in win column 11-0

   FORT WAYNE — By way of the mercy rule, Whitko baseball needed just five innings Wednesday to record its first win of the season.
   The Wildcats hit the road to Fort Wayne Paul Harding in search of a win after falling to class 3A No. 1 New Haven Monday.
   Behind a three-hit pitching performance from sophomore Wyatt Wolf, Whitko found an 11-0 victory over the Hawks.

Huntington rallies 2-1, Whitko drops first game

   HUNTINGTON — A night after opening the season with a 5-3 win at home, Whitko softball hit the road for its next challenge in a young but undefeated season.
   The trip took the Lady Wildcats to Huntington North and sent them home with a tough 2-1 loss.
   Whitko saw a late 1-0 lead in the fifth inning fade over the final two innings to the Lady Vikings.
   After four scoreless innings of play, Whitko struck first in the top of the fifth inning.

Irwin named Junior All-Star

   SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko boys’ basketball leading scorer Logan Irwin has gone all season known as a leading scorer in northern Indiana. All-Star selection committees recognized that when Irwin was named a  North Junior All-Star.
   Irwin was one of six players across northern Indiana selected to play the senior all-stars on June 6 at a to-be-announced site.
   Irwin became Whitko’s all-time leading scorer this season with 1,556 points and is on pace to become a 2,000-point scorer upon graduation.

Words give window into pain

COLUMBIA CITY — Linbeth Doggendorf’s voice was barely audible as she gushed about the daughter she lost more than a year ago.
Her testimony could barely be heard in a courtroom with bad acoustics, compounded by her soft-spoken nature and muffled further by the sobs of friends and family.
“It’s turned our world upside down,” she said. “Nothing is the same. Everything’s not right anymore.”

Two face charges after meth lab explosion, death

COLUMBIA CITY — A second arrest was made this week in connection with the explosion of a suspected meth lab in a rural Whitley County mobile home park that killed a woman in December of last year.
Joshua B. Angus, 25, of Fort Wayne was arrested and charged Monday with four counts stemming from the Dec. 3, 2010 explosion that killed 24-year-old Alecia Stine at Miami Village Trailer Park on Old Trail Road east of Columbia City.
A second man, Wade Burns, was charged in February.

Herendeen, Turner delivery: ’Busco 1-2 combo shutout Leo in opener 1-0

   CHURUBUSCO — Dylan Herendeen and Jordan Turner hung up their basketball shoes for bats and sunflower seeds, kicking off Churubusco’s baseball season in prime fashion Tuesday.
   The pair of seniors worked together to post a 1-0 shutout against Leo.
   Herendeen controlled the defensive side taking Leo out of its offense.
   The senior lefty posted nine strikeouts and two outs by rundowns in the first and third innings. Herendeen threw a complete seven-inning shutout at the mound.

’Cats clear TRC test, top Wabash

   SOUTH WHITLEY — It’s only March and Whitko track and field may have already had its biggest test in the Three Rivers Conference.
   Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats faced the team that has kept them from a TRC title the past two seasons.
   Despite winning eight events, Wabash couldn’t match the depth of the Lady Wildcats.
   Whitko served up the first blow of the season beating Wabash 62-52 before the two teams meet again in the TRC meet May 12.

Lady Wildcats’ ‘O’ffense leads way in opener

   SOUTH WHITLEY — The best offense was a good pitcher Tuesday for Whitko softball.
   Opening the 2011 season at home, the Lady Wildcats took a 5-3 lead into the top of the seventh inning against Oak Hill.
   After the tying run reached base, Whitko’s Karissa Olinske clinched the win forcing three consecutive outs.  She had six strikeouts on the night.
   Olinske, or ‘O’ as they like to call her, added to the Whitko offense recording a triple.
