Dryer, Cheng tops in ’11 class

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City High School seniors will be led by two young ladies this year.
Alexandria Kathleen Dryer, daughter of Jeff and Sharon Dryer of Columbia City achieved valedictorian status for the 2011 graduating class and Hei Lam “May” Cheng, daughter of Ray and Amy Cheng of Columbia City ranked salutatorian.
“We were tied for second at the beginning of the year,” said Cheng in a dual interview with Dryer Thursday.
It was the weight of the Advanced Placement classes that separated the top three students in the final rankings.

Theo Thomas, 84

Theo J. Thomas, 84, of Syracuse, passed away at 5:50 a.m. Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne. He was born Jan. 25, 1927 in Wolf Lake to Carlton L. and Edna (Galloway) Thomas.
Survivors include a daughter, Beckie Thomas; a son, Carl (Becky) Thomas of Mishawaka; a brother, DeWitt Thomas, and lifetime companion, Phyllis Weaver.

Chelsea Solliday, 19

Chelsea Patricia Solliday, 19, of New Hope, Ala., passed away Thursday, May 5, 2011.
Born Nov. 2, 1991, she was a daughter of James Solliday and Denise H. (Jody) Schaffer,
Besides her parents, survivors include a son, Cameron Solliday; grandmother, Patricia Bradlow; sister, Wendy Estelle; three uncles, Geoff (Cheryl) Hoch, Christian Hoch and Bradley (Holly) Solliday; an aunt, Tammy (Paul) Solliday-Burris; a great-uncle, William Beckman; and cousins, Autum Solliday and John Solliday.

Hazel Hartley, 96

Hazel L. Hartley, 96, of Columbia City, passed away at 1:15 a.m. Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Sycamore Village, Fort Wayne. Born May 28, 1914 in Mercer County, Pa., she was a daughter of Charles and Emma (Miller) Musselman.
She lived in Allen and Noble counties until moving to Florida and then returned to Whitley County. She married Ralph “Jack” Hartley. She worked for Fort Wayne Community Schools at Lakeside School as a cook.

Four-peat: ’Cats remain atop TRC

   WABASH — For the athletes on Whitko’s boys track and field team, there hasn’t been a season where they haven’t been a champion.
   Thursday, the Wildcats set out to meet their biggest goal of the year.

’Busco ‘Owens’ Westview

   CHURUBUSCO — It’s been a long uphill battle for Brent Owen.
   Injury setbacks have put his baseball future into question at times.
   Thursday, Owen fought through those areas of concern to get back to what he knows best.
   Pitching.
   The senior slinger made just his third start of the season against Westview at home.

Burkhart throws no-no in senior night win 10-0

   CHURUBUSCO — A perfect ending for four seniors came Thursday as Churubusco softball held its final home game of the season.
   The Lady Eagles came away with a 10-0 win in five innings over Westview.

Whitko educators bone up on technology in the classroom

County teams to open softball sectionals

   INDIANAPOLIS — Thursday, the Indiana High School Athletic Association held its drawing for softball sectional brackets to take place the week of May 23-28.
   Among those drawn, three Whitley County teams found out their fate.
   In two sectional tournaments, local teams will play the opening game.

Zwick leads Lady ’Cats in runner-up finish to Wabash

   WABASH — For a third season in a row, Whitko girls’ track and field had to settle for second place at the Three Rivers Conference meet.
   Thursday at Southwood High School, the Lady Wildcats had Wabash beat them for a third consecutive season 124-106 for the conference crown.
