Betty L. Mogensen, 83, formerly of Columbia City and Pierceton, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015 in Salt Springs, Fla.
She was born Oct. 4, 1931 in Lagrange, a daughter of Harold and Goldie Mae (Anspaugh) Waldeck. As a young girl, her family moved to a farm in Thorncreek Township, later into Columbia City and then Richland Township. She graduated from Larwill High School.

Richard E. “Dick” Kranifeld, 89

Richard E. “Dick” Kranifeld, 89, of South Whitley, died Saturday morning, Jan. 17, 2015 at the home of Keith and Judy Kelsey, his caregivers.
He was born July 2, 1925 in Fort Wayne, a son of Elmer Leroy and Edna (Jones) Kranifeld. His formative years were spent in South Whitley and Fort Wayne until 1935 when his family moved to New Haven. He attended high school at New Haven for two years and graduated in 1943 from South Side High School when his family moved back to Fort Wayne. He completed his education at International Business College.

Jarrod Anthony Lewis, 22

Jarrod Anthony Lewis, 22, of Pierceton, passed away at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015 at his home. Born May 18, 1992, in Warsaw, he was the son of Jack Kenneth and Crystal Mourning (Lewis) Funnell.
He graduated from Whitko High School with the Class of 2010. Jarrod loved football, was the Captain of Whitko Football Team, was a wrestler for Whitko and was a member of FCCLA.

Marilyn A. Helgesen, 77

Marilyn A. Helgesen, 77, a resident of Churubusco, passed away at 9:35 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at Wesley Healthcare in Auburn following a four year battle with Bulbar ALS.
Mrs. Helgesen was born Dec. 28, 1937 in Smith Township, a daughter of Luey J. and Florence (Ott) Wade. She was a lifelong resident of Churubusco and graduated from Churubusco High School in 1955.

CONFERENCE TOURNEY CHAMPS: Churubusco wins first boys tournament title

LAGRANGE — Churubusco’s boys basketball team did something Saturday night that no other basketball team in the history of the school has done — won a conference tourney championship.

The Eagles defeated the Fairfield Falcons in the championship game, 63-59. From the beginning of the game, it was apparent that it would be a fast-paced battle.

DAZZLERS: Grow, perform, compete

COLUMBIA CITY — From professional basketball to the competition floor, the Whitley County Dazzlers continue to make a name for themselves.

The special needs cheerleading squad has grown from nine members to 16 in the last two years.

In that time, the squad has won national-level competitions and been an inspiration for special needs children in Whitley County and the region.

FOG; Visibility decreased

COLUMBIA CITY — Fog settled into the area at approximately 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, creating driving hazards and visibility issues in Whitley County.

Schools were not delayed due to the late onset of the fog.
