The first Dairy Queen store opened in Joliet, Ill. in 1940. By 1947, 100 stores were in operation which mushroomed to 1,446 just three years later.
Today, the Dairy Queen system claims to be one of the largest fast food systems in the world with 5,900 restaurants in the United States, Canada and 20 foreign countries.
President Pro Tem David Long today appointed Sen. Jim Banks (R-Columbia City) to serve on three key Senate standing committees.
Long (R-Fort Wayne) appointed Banks to serve on the Senate Committees on Agriculture and Natural Resources; Education and Career Development; and Homeland Security, Transportation and Veterans Affairs. He will also serve on the Senateâ€™s Public Safety Subcommittee.
Lawmakers formally organized for the 2011 legislative session on Nov. 16. They will reconvene on Jan. 5.
CHURUBUSCO â€” Wednesday eveningâ€™s Churubusco Town Council meeting involved discussion of the fire contract, selection of a bank bid, and further discussion of the Indiana Downtown Project.
The Indiana Downtown Project the town is considering is similar to one Columbia City did five years ago.
Churubusco has a chance to get a grant that will pay half of the $15,000 consultation fee. Downtown business owners are all in favor of pursuing this project, as many of them attended a previous town council meeting in support of it.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Two local residents are preparing for what promises to be a hyperactive session of the Indiana Legislature.
Jim Banks and Kathy Heuer, who will begin their first terms in the Indiana Senate and House of Representatives respectively Jan. 5, say they expect their inaugural sessions of the state legislature to be filled to the rafters with the governorâ€™s â€śto-do list.â€ť
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Dustin Shenberger burst into tears when the verdict was read.
A jury of nine women and three men deliberated two and a half hours Thursday before returning not guilty verdicts on charges of child molestation and sexual misconduct with a minor against the 36-year-old Pennsylvania man.
Shenberger was accused of having a sexual relationship with a girl, now 19, when she was between 13 and 15 years old.
The trial was the second in the case after a jury in August couldnâ€™t reach a verdict.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Residents of a rural Columbia City mobile home community were awakened early this morning by an explosion, followed by the lights and sirens of emergency vehicles responding to the blast of a suspected methamphetamine lab that killed a woman.
According to Whitley County Sheriff Mark Hodges, Alecia L. Stine, 24, was found dead on the floor of her master bedroom.
