Sheriff’s reserves plan ATV fundraising ride

     “Reserve your right to ride,” the slogan reads for the first annual Whitley County Sheriff’s Reserves fundraising ATV and motorcycle ride.
     Just as they do every year, the reserve deputy program hosts two fundraisers to help with equipment and supplies for the job they do for the sheriff’s department for no pay.
     A breakfast at the Whitley County 4-H grounds is one annual fundraiser done for years, but this year, the program will test new waters with the ATV ride.

     Offering incentives for attracting businesses to an area is nothing new, and one way of attracting a prospective employer is through a tax increment financing district, which takes any taxes paid on improvements for a property and diverts them back to that same property.

A local tribute on a national day of mourning

A prominent display of patriotism could be found Saturday at Paige’s Crossing as the Union Township Fire Department hosted a fundraiser. Several local and area departments attended the event. They lined the entrance drive with nearly a dozen fire trucks, lights flashing, as an aerial unit from Aboite Township proudly flew a large American flag over the entrance. It was one of many area and national tributes on the ninth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in New York, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

Best of the Decade: Moore a big piece in bigger puzzle

   “Any individual award you get, I’m convinced, is a by-product of how successful your team was.”
   Humbled is what Marcus Moore was after being told he was selected by The Post & Mail readers as male athlete of the decade.
   The former Columbia City boys’ basketball star, better known as one-half of the Moore twins, just saw himself as another piece to the puzzle that was a huge success for Columbia City athletics.

   He’s the one and only at Columbia City High School. Not the talented teammates around him nor the names that join him on the top 10 career scoring list can say what he can.
   Indiana All-Star Doug Sheckler.
   One of the many elements of a 2004 state finalist team in boys’ basketball, Sheckler was the go-to scoring threat for the Eagles in their pursuit of a state title.

Best of the Decade: Prayer becomes life of basketball

   For just about as long as she can remember, Connie Myers wanted to be a basketball player.
   “You know how when you’re a kid and you pray silly little prayers? I remember laying in my bunk at night and praying that someday I’d make the (basketball) team.”
   Not only did she make the team, but she helped her team reach the pinnacle of both the high school and college game and now has been recognized by readers of The Post & Mail as the female athlete of the   decade.

   If Leah Eber wanted to, she could look down her nose at a lot of her fellow competitors.
   She’s got the hardware and the records to back it up: A four-time sectional champion in three different events and 10 first-team, all-conference awards in track.
   But she’s not that kind of person. And it’s her attitude as well as her abilities that helped readers choose Eber as the No. 2 female athlete of the decade.

County joins regional effort for brownfield assessment grants

     In an effort to determine how contaminated former industrial and business sites are in Whitley County, the county commissioners have agreed to be part of a regional effort to get a collective $1 million in federal funds for seven area counties.
     The county will be part of Region III-A’s collaborative efforts to get a collective $1 million U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the 10 counties in and around Region III-A, a regional planning commission and economic development district.

County expands revitalization area

     In an effort to speed the process for tax abatement requests in Whitley County, the county council approved Wednesday making any eligible land in the county an economic revitalization area.
     “Other counties in the region have taken a similar step,” said Alan Tió, president of the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation.

Best of the Decade: Setting standard for seasons to come

   They were known to voters as “hands down, the most exciting team of the decade.”
   It’s the team that made “this community become ‘Hoosiers.’”
   The Post & Mail readers spoke. The 2004 state finalist Columbia City boys’ basketball team is “definitely the best team of the decade.”
   Coming up on a seventh season since the faithful run to the state finals, the feeling remains the same in Columbia City.
