After nearly six hours of deliberation, a jury of eight women and four men was unable to reach a verdict in the trial of a Pennsylvania man charged with 15 counts of child molesting and 51 counts of sexual misconduct with a minor.
Whitley County Circuit Court Judge James Heuer told the jury that it is uncommon to not reach a verdict, but it does occasionally occur.
“I do respect the fact that you worked your best to reach a conclusion,” he said.
August 25th
A Pennsylvania man charged with 15 counts of child molesting and 51 counts of sexual misconduct with a minor for alleged sexual contact with a local girl went to trial Tuesday over the 66 class A and B felonies.
The prosecution contends the case is one of exploitation of a vulnerable girl, but the man’s defense attorney says the girl made up the allegations against a man she was infatuated with and upset over a custody battle.
What’s underneath the ground in Whitley County?
The Indiana Geological Survey is working on finding out just what makes up the depths of the county by taking several core samples of the area.
On Tuesday, the crew was at M.C. Wheeler and Sons Inc., in northwest Whitley County, where the deepest cores yet, about 200 feet, were taken.
Five samples 200 feet deep will be taken from the northwest area of the county.
CHURUBUSCO — The Smith-Green school board approved filling several positions at S-G and opening up another teaching position, while adding a benefit to Superintendent Steve Darnell’s contract at its meeting Monday.
Personnel added to the roster included Kameron Miller as groundskeeper/maintenance, Michael McPeak as a long-term substitute covering a medical leave, Deanna Elzey as a long-term substitute covering a maternity leave, and Mark Cheshire to continue in his role as sponsor of the pep band.

Linda Ramsey of Columbia City lost her 28-year-old daughter less than a month ago, and as hard as it is, she says she’s talking about it — albeit with teary eyes — to just about anyone who will listen.
Her daughter, Lilly Helsley, of Middletown, died July 30 after smoking K2 for the first time.
Responders found a package of the substance commonly considered to be synthetic marijuana at her home, and her family discovered text messages she’d sent to her friends that day proclaiming that K2 was “just as good as weed.”

The 156th annual Squawbuck Days festival kicks off Friday night, but the bulk of the activities take place Saturday.
Squawbuck is the name that early settlers used when referring to Chief Mes-qua-buck, a Potawatomi Indian whose village and home was near Oswego, located in what is now Kosciusko County, according to the Squawbuck Days guide.
Now the festival named in his honor is used to help give residents a chance to renew old acquaintances and enjoy Larwill’s past and present.
A Whitley County teenager had his first court appearance Monday as an adult after he was waived from juvenile court to answer charges that he and another teen allegedly broke into several homes, including one where they were armed with guns.
Seventeen-year-old Luke Cabiya is charged with a class B felony burglary, class D felonies of theft and possession of stolen property, and a class A misdemeanor charge of possession of a handgun without a permit.
In the summer of 2009, a group of Hoosiers concerned about the time zone in which Indiana was placed began a push to get the state on Central Time.
Since then, the momentum has continued to grow and in next year’s legislative session, a State Representative will introduce a resolution to have the state on Central Time.
In the meantime, the Central Time Coalition sent resolutions to Indiana’s public schools to see if they would endorse the group’s efforts.

A local man was seriously injured Saturday morning when the truck he was driving was struck by a car which did not stop at a stop sign.
Thirty-two-year-old Jason Christman was listed in critical condition this morning at Parkview Hospital after he sustained neck and spinal injuries in the crash at county roads 800 South and 600 East.
Two passengers in his truck, 59-year-old Ova D. Stephens and 31-year-old Justin Stephens, also suffered injuries and were taken by ambulance to Parkview in Fort Wayne, according to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.
Paul's Pad in Churubusco is now open and ready for splashing about after the official ribbon cutting Saturday evening. The splash pad was made possible by a generous donation from Paul Mueller, who died in 2003. A committee worked diligently to make the splash pad a reality. Landscaping work still needs to be finished around the splash pad.
