COLUMBIA CITY — He took one look at her and knew she was going to be his bride.
What Keith Nicodemus didn’t know was that Frances would be his bride for 70 years.
Keith and Frances were skating at the Happy Valley Roller Rink in Columbia City but didn’t know each other.
“I was with Eldon Anderson and I told him that girl was going to be my wife,” said Keith.
Eldon told him he was crazy.
Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma said Thursday that lawmakers may seek passage of a statewide smoking ban before the nation’s attention turns to Indianapolis for the February Super Bowl.
Bosma, R-Indianapolis, said he may speed through a statewide smoking ban since Indianapolis’ City-County Council on Tuesday voted down a proposal to ban smoking in the city ahead of the Feb. 5 Super Bowl.

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City Police Department and the Whitley County Humane Society Animal Shelter work in tandem to help both animals and residents of the city, according to Columbia City’s top police officer.
Columbia City Police Chief Mike Petersen said the city is required by the state to have at minimum one animal control officer.
In Columbia City, one officer is not assigned to this duty; the entire department participates.
“Any of our officers can work a case,” said Petersen
WATERLOO, Ind. — Indiana State Police have released the name of a northeastern Indiana police officer who was shot in the face while responding to a distress call.
State Police Sgt. Ron Galaviz says 47-year-old Deputy Marshal Stephen Brady, of Pleasant Lake, remained in serious condition at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Brady is a 13-year veteran of the Waterloo Police Department, located in DeKalb County. He was shot while responding to a report that a man and woman had knocked on someone’s door about 3 a.m. Thursday saying they needed help because their car was stuck in a ditch.
The Criminal Investigation Division of the Indiana State Police arrested a Big Lake resident late Wednesday night on two counts of child molesting and one count of failing to register as a sex offender following a two week-long investigation.
Robert S. Gibson, 39, of rural Columbia City (Big Lake in Noble County) was arrested in connection to an allegation that he had sexual contact with a female victim under the age of 14 during the summer of 2010.
He was charged with two felony counts of child molesting and also for failing to register as a sex offender.

Area police and firemen have been dispatched to U.S. 30 for a reported school bus on fire.
According to scanner traffic, the bus is believed to be empty.
UPDATE: Upon arrival by first responders, the bus is empty and according to police scanner traffic, the bus is having mechanical issues. No injuries have been reported.
A 59-year-old Amish man from northern Indiana was killed when the horse-drawn buggy he was driving across an intersection was struck by a sport utility vehicle.
The Elkhart County Sheriff's Department says Marion Yoder of Goshen was killed in the collision about 2.5 miles southeast of Goshen about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday. Yoder, his 53-year-old wife and 8-year-old grandson were thrown from the buggy. The sheriff's department says Yoder went under the SUV.
Edith Yoder and Caleb Yoder were listed in fair condition Wednesday at Memorial Hospital in South Bend.
COLUMBIA CITY — The 2012 salary for elected officials – specifically a raise in the mayor’s pay – dominated Tuesday night's regular meeting of the Columbia City Common Council.

Mayor James Fleck advocated a change to the salary at the previous meeting, which he hopes will put the position of mayor on the same pay-grade as that of department heads.
The original alteration called for over $7,228 to be added to the mayor’s salary, raising the annual salary from $54,132 currently to $61,360.
COLUMBIA CITY — Iotron Industries USA recently installed its 2.5 ton electron-beam linear accelerator at the company’s new $15 million facility in Columbia City, according to Tino Pereira, president and CEO of Iotron. The Canadian company decided to locate its new 54,000-square-foot e-beam sterilization and materials modification operation in Northeast Indiana in 2010 following an extensive 16-month search, according to company officials.
FORT WAYNE – Five Indiana State Troopers recently observed a milestone in their respective careers as a result of achievement, service and dedication to the Indiana State Police Department and to the citizens of the State of Indiana.
According to Lieutenant Tony Casto, Fort Wayne District commander, the following Troopers have completed 20 years of service to the Indiana State Police.
