June 21st
SOUTH WHITLEY — Alan Tio, Whitley County Economic Development Corporation’s president, attended the South Whitley town council meeting June 14 and provided an overview of last year, along with priorities, future activities and budget updates.
“We (EDC) are doing more than ever before,” Tio said. “Our marketing budget will increase next year and we are also looking to add to our staff area.”

COLUMBIA CITY — Local software development company SubdivisionINFO.com announced Monday it is launching a proprietary web solution for home buyers in new markets in 2011.
The company anticipates adding three employees immediately and up to 25-30 employees by 2013 to support its expansion, according to a press release from the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation.

COLUMBIA CITY — You’ve heard of chicken barbecues, candy bar and bake sales, pork chop dinners and 50/50 raffles for fund raisers, but it’s rare to have an 86-year-old record a musical CD for a fund raiser.
That’s exactly what happened for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Columbia City Church of the Brethren. They celebrated this milestone on May 1, but the celebration continues all year long. The church has had special music and concerts also.

June 17th
COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s First Church of God will be the site of this year’s Mr. and Miss Whitley County 4-H Scholarship Program.
A field of 21 ladies and five gentlemen will represent Whitley County Monday, June 27 at 7 p.m.
Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. and admission is $1 with proceeds going to the Hester Adams Memorial Award Winners.

COLUMBIA CITY – Have you ever wondered what those old silver coins in your coffee can were worth? When was the last time you even pulled them out from your closet, basement or attic?
Now is the time to begin your hunt because the International Coin Collectors Association is coming to Columbia City in search of the most rare coins in the world.
The ICCA will be at the VFW in Columbia City, 415 E. Chicago St., this coming Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

COLUMBIA CITY — Parkview Whitley Hospital broke ground Thursday for a new 5,500 square-foot ambulance building at its new hospital site, with construction of the $900,000 project to begin soon after.
It is scheduled to open Oct. 20, the same day as the new hospital.

COLUMBIA CITY — For the first time in the 25-year history of the Indiana Highland Games & Scottish Festival, the event highlighting Scottish heritage and culture has moved to Whitley County.
Slated for Saturday, June 25, 2011, the Indiana Highland Games & Scottish Festival will be held from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Whitley County 4-H Fairgrounds in Columbia City.
Admission and parking for the event are free, due to a grant from the Whitley County Community Foundation.
June 15th
COLUMBIA CITY — A snap decision by a sheriff’s deputy Tuesday was the cause of a two-car collision that totaled a squad car, but caused no injuries, according to police.
According to squad car camera footage, Whitley County Sheriff’s Deputy Jeff Lewis was southbound on Ind. 9 just south of U.S. 30 at approximately 10:30 p.m. when he saw a car with a headlight out.

June 14th
LARWILL – Ind. 5, north of Larwill, closed at 7 a.m. today so crews can begin replacing a drainage structure, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Fort Wayne District.
The detour follows Ind. 109 and U.S. 33. It adds about seven miles for through traffic.
The project is expected to be complete by early August, weather permitting.

COLUMBIA CITY — One of two suspects in the case of an exploding methamphetamine lab that killed a woman last December will serve 12 years in jail.
Joshua B. Angus, 25, was in Whitley County Circuit Court this morning for sentencing after pleading guilty May 16.
