Top showmen named at 2011 4-H Fair

COLUMBIA CITY — It’s a goal that most 4-Hers aspire to — Showman of Showmen Round Robin Champion.
But only two can achieve that goal each year. Crystal VanHouten and Tyler Johnson are the 2011 Round Robin Champions.
VanHouten won in the small animal category and Johnson won in the large animal category.

WCCS ISTEP results mostly positive

July 21, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — The showing made by local students in annual statewide testing led the topics of discussion by the Whitley County Consolidated School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees this week.
Superintendent Dr. Patricia O’Connor presented the results to the board, which profiled WCCS students in grades 3-8. Her impressions of the results, as they relate to local students, was anything but pessimistic.

Whitko to update marketing plan

PIERCETON — The Whitko Community School Corporation board of trustees held its regular monthly meeting Monday evening with superintendent Steve Clason presenting a marketing plan update which will soon be implemented.
“We have an ongoing marketing plan and a curriculum plan,” Clason said. “Communication (plan) was due by June and it’s a little bit after June, but we (board) do have a plan in place.”

Hodges incident to go to special prosecutor

SOUTH WHITLEY – Indiana State Police said Wednesday afternoon that troopers were called to the residence of a Whitley County “elected official” for a domestic issue.
The Whitley County Prosecutor’s Office confirmed today the incident involved Whitley County Sheriff Mark Hodges and his estranged wife, Laurell.

Creech trial continued; new date unknown

July 20, 2011

COLUMBIA CITY — The Columbia City woman charged with drug crimes and the neglect of a dependent scheduled to face trial next week has had her trial bumped back — again.
Janel M. Creech, 37, has been in the Whitley County Jail since Jan. 11 after being charged Jan. 7 with manufacturing methamphetamine and other drug-related offenses in connection with a Jan. 3 incident that resulted in the death of her 5-month-old daughter.

Clason: Whitko will keep up with today's advancing technology

PIERCETON — At Whitko Community School Corporation’s monthly meeting of the Board of School Trustees Monday, Superintendent Steve Clason provided technology updates for the new school year.
Technology changes at Whitko High School (WHS) include three one-to-one classrooms where every student will have access to a computer all day.

Kiwanis to host mayoral debate

July 20, 2011

The Kiwanis of Whitley County will host a debate for the three candidates for the office of mayor of Columbia City, the organization announced this week.
The debate is scheduled for Aug. 23 at 7:30 p.m. at the Peabody Public Library.
The moderator for the event will be Fort Wayne radio personality Pat Miller.

Commission approves EMS option

COLUMBIA CITY — The issue of Emergency Medical Service in Whitley County continues to be a divisive one.
In a joint meeting of the Whitley County Board of Commissioners and County Council Monday afternoon, an agreement was reached on which of several proposed contracts with Parkview Whitley Hospital the county should sign. But, the funding for that proposal lost its financial backing in a matter of minutes.
“We’re in a stalemate,” said acting Whitley County Council Chairman John Barrett.

Urban takes assistant principal slot at ISMS

COLUMBIA CITY – When the doors to Indian Springs Middle School open Aug. 16, it will be under a slightly different regime.
Michelle Urban, a science teacher with the school since 2004, was recommended and subsequently appointed to the position of assistant principal by the Whitley County Consolidated School Corporation’s Board of School Trustees at Monday’s meeting.

Reiff new principal at Col. City High School

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City High School’s new principal says she will be bringing a can-do attitude to the helm when school begins next month.
“I am very excited to return to CCHS in this leadership position,” said Jennifer Reiff, who was approved earlier this month by the corporation’s board to assume the high school’s top spot.
