Eckert lauded by Smith-Green schools

CHURUBUSCO — Smith-Green Community School’s Board of Trustees applauded the efforts of Churubusco Elementary School’s Karen Eckert at its regular meeting last week.
Eckert, a fifth-grade teacher at C.E.S. in her second year, was named Teacher of the Month for August.

Tri-Lakes receives grant for channel dredging program

LITTLE CEDAR LAKE — A pair of channels on Little Cedar Lake will be dredged thanks to a grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
The Tri-Lakes Property Owners Association announced last week it had been awarded a $112,000 LARE (Lake and River Enhancement) grant from IDNR to remove sediment from the two channels on Little Cedar Lake.

Greatest generation reunites

COLUMBIA CITY — It was a rare occasion for everyone. Not one person in the room had ever attended a class reunion quite like this one.
The Columbia City High School Class of 1941 met for it’s 70th class reunion Saturday at a Big G’s Restaurant.

Blue River Trail: Architect offers advice on new restrooms, expansion

COLUMBIA CITY — Architect Teresa Ladd provided new public restroom ideas on the Blue River Trail expansion project to Columbia City’s Park Board at its monthly meeting last week.
The trail expansion is slated to follow Blue River and connect near Countryside Square Shopping Center. The additional public restroom would be located on the north side of U.S. 30.

Local dentist hangs up the drill after 35 years

CROOKED LAKE — When his receptionist told him she was going to retire, John Meier and his wife, Aileen, decided that it was about time they did too.
And that’s just what happened. The Columbia City couple retired from dentistry and aren’t making any plans for their future.

Churubusco clerk, council filing ends

CHURUBUSCO – Candida-tes have been established for positions of town clerk-treasurer and town council in Churubusco. Filing deadline was Tuesday.
Republicans will have a contest for town clerk-treasurer; only one Republican and one Democrat can be on the ballot for town-clerk treasurer on Nov. 8, Election Day. A GOP town convention this month, yet to be scheduled, will determine the GOP candidate.

South Whitley to hold own election Nov. 8

SOUTH WHITLEY — In a special meeting Thursday evening, South Whitley’s Town Council voted to conduct its own Nov. 8 municipal election – forgoing involvement by Whitley County.
“Given the filings that occurred on Friday of last week, the town will have to administer a general election in November of this year,” town attorney Greg Hockemeyer said. “In the past when there has been a need for a general election, the town has opted to do its own rather than pay the county to conduct the election on behalf of the town.”

COLUMBIA CITY — County Attorney Dan Sigler has been tasked with sifting through the heated debate and unanswered questions regarding the county’s emergency medical service in order to help broker an agreement between the county and Parkview Whitley Hospital.
It is a job, he says, that is challenging to say the least.

Breast-feeding week bolsters information about nature's perfect food

COLUMBIA CITY — This is World Breast-feeding Week – and several Whitley County moms and their families celebrated.
The event was at the Whitley County Women, Infant Children (WIC) office in Columbia City Wednesday. Nine mothers, three fathers and 11 children attended the celebration hosted by Danielle Henderson, breast feeding peer counselor at WIC.
