ISMS sprinting to Sept. 14 deadline; requests help from the public

COLUMBIA CITY — A vote for Indian Springs Middle School could garner a $5,000 scholarship to fund a special field trip in the spring.
The eighth-grade class at ISMS has begun the mission of forgoing an annual spring party and replacing it with a field trip to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. The trip would support the curriculum; a spring party would not.

Churubusco on board with new formula to pay for November municipal election

CHURUBUSCO — Voter turn-out in Churubusco municipal elections has been only about 20 percent – or approximately 200 voters – in recent years.
The Churubusco Town Council voted Wednesday to take up the new election cost formula created by the Whitley County Election Board, made up of Debbie Beers, Ray Whitehall and Tam Mitchell.

Exploding transformer

Embers fly from a utility pole Wednesday night in Churubusco as a transformer exploded, causing power outages throughout the town. The pole caught on fire at approximately 9 p.m. Firemen were unable to extinguish the fire, and had to wait an hour for the electrical company to cut the power. The secondary transformer blew, creating a fireworks show and cutting power to parts of Churubusco at approximately 9:45 p.m. According to emergency radio traffic, the electric company, AEP, killed the primary power minutes before a dangerous explosion.
