September 12th
Whitko High School senior Connor Maggard plays a bass riff with the school’s pep band Saturday at Ball State University’s Scheumann Stadium. The Whitko band was in Muncie to support the Wildcat football team which participated in the Three Rivers Conference shootout, a day of conference gridiron action played on the BSU Cardinals’ home field. Sophia Hatcher, 9, shapes a piece of pottery Saturday during the 10th Annual Whitley County Autumn Art Festival, held in downtown Columbia City. The pottery booth was one of many that surrounded the county courthouse during the all-day festival, which also included a variety of entertainment.
COLUMBIA CITY — Fifteen women could have easily won the contest, but in the end Michaela Thomas was named 2012 Distinguished Young Woman (DYW) of Whitley County.
The daughter of Micah and Michelle Thomas is a senior at Columbia City High School. She said she was shocked she won.

President George W. Bush addressed the nation at 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 11, 2001, from the Oval Office of the White House.
“None of us will ever forget this day,” he told the nation, “yet we go forward to defend freedom and all that is good and just in our world. We are going to win. We’re going to do what it takes to win this war,” said Bush.

COLUMBIA CITY — Two women have been to nearly all the performances of America’s Junior Miss at Columbia City High School – and they have no plans to miss this year’s on Saturday night.
The 2012 Distinguished Young Women program starts at 7 p.m. Saturday Newell Rice Auditorium at CCHS. Admission is $10 for adults and $5 for students.

September 8th
COLUMBIA CITY — A vote for Indian Springs Middle School could garner a $5,000 scholarship to fund a special field trip in the spring.
The eighth-grade class at ISMS has begun the mission of forgoing an annual spring party and replacing it with a field trip to the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. The trip would support the curriculum; a spring party would not.

CHURUBUSCO — Voter turn-out in Churubusco municipal elections has been only about 20 percent – or approximately 200 voters – in recent years.
The Churubusco Town Council voted Wednesday to take up the new election cost formula created by the Whitley County Election Board, made up of Debbie Beers, Ray Whitehall and Tam Mitchell.

Embers fly from a utility pole Wednesday night in Churubusco as a transformer exploded, causing power outages throughout the town. The pole caught on fire at approximately 9 p.m. Firemen were unable to extinguish the fire, and had to wait an hour for the electrical company to cut the power. The secondary transformer blew, creating a fireworks show and cutting power to parts of Churubusco at approximately 9:45 p.m. According to emergency radio traffic, the electric company, AEP, killed the primary power minutes before a dangerous explosion.
September 7th
CHURUBUSCO — There is no choir/show choir teacher yet at Churubusco High School and Mark Grove is, again, the head baseball coach.
At the Smith-Green Community School Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday it was announced by Steve Darnell, superintendent, Churubusco High School still does not have a choir/show choir teacher.

COLUMBIA CITY – The state of energy reliability locally is considered “positive,” according to a pair of experts speaking at a forum Tuesday night hosted by the Whitley County Patriots at the Church of the Nazarene.
Larry Graham, public affairs officer for Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) was on hand to discuss the current and future state of the area’s natural gas supply.
