Albion hunter dies after tussle with shot buck

ALBION, Ind. (AP) — A northeastern Indiana hunter has died after struggling with a buck he had just shot.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says 62-year-old Paul Smith of Fort Wayne died Monday during a deer reduction hunt at Chain O’Lakes State Park about 20 miles northwest of the city. It says the Noble County coroner says the death was due to a lacerated liver, possibly suffered during the struggle.

2012-2013 school calendar proposed

COLUMBIA CITY — The 2012-2013 school calendar was proposed this week at a very brief work session for the Whitley County Consolidated School Board of Trustees.
Pending approval of the schedule at the board’s next meeting, the first day of school will be Aug. 21, 2012 and the school year will end on June 5, 2012 – barring the need for any makeup days due to weather.

The first snow of the season fell in Whitley County Thursday afternoon. There has been minimal accumulation and light snow showers are expected throughout the night.

Snow squalls usher in season at 2:09 p.m.

Break out the snowmobiles, sleds and snow shovels, the season's first snow blew into Whitley County at 2:09 p.m. today, Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011.
With temperatures barely reaching 40 degrees today, a few snowflakes at 2 p.m. turned into brief but semi-heavy snow squalls throughout the afternoon. Snow was confirmed in Columbia City and South Whitley, and from radar reports undoubtedly was present throughout Whitley County.
No accumulation was reported or expected.

WCCS New Teacher Program succeeding

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated Schools implemented a project last year known as the New Teacher Program.
Michelle Urban, vice principal at Indian Springs Middle School, updated the WCCS school board on the program’s progress Monday.
Urban said the goal of the program is to explore best practices, provide them with educational research and create an environment for elaboration and discussion.
The program meets once a month. Following the meeting, Urban emails an account along with questions and material for the mentors to work on with their mentees.

County making redistricting moves

COLUMBIA CITY – Whitley County will be undergoing some minor district changes in time for the 2012 primary elections. Deb Beers of the Whitley County Clerk’s office has been working on getting the new districts mapped and filed with the state. Dan Weigold and Jessica Hockemeyer have been assisting on the project. There will be slight shift in district borders, most notably moving Columbia Northwest to district two.

Daniel wins decisively

COLUMBIA CITY — Community speculation about who would replace Democrat Mayor Jim Fleck is finally over.
Ryan Daniel, one of several candidates younger than 30 to earn their city’s top elected spot in Indiana, soundly defeated Democrat challenger Cathy Heritier and Libertarian Scott Wise.

New Clerk-Treasurer for Churubusco

There will be a new clerk-treasurer in Churubusco, as Democrat Madalyn Sade-Bartl outpolled incumbent Republican Gerri Johnson, 157 votes to 131.

Town Council will be made up of incumbent Frank A. Kessler (D), 203 votes; Alan D. Malcom (D), 175 votes; and Mark Pepple (R), 165 votes. Republicans John Hart and Pat Stanford received 137 and 128 votes, respectively. Hart was an incumbent.
