COLUMBIA CITY — The Beatles wrote a song about it. Teenagers dream about it. Vacations begin and end with it. Driving a car. For Paul Gates, 83, of Columbia City, driving was a pleasure. Gates remembers his first car, a 1932 Chevy bought in 1947.

“Cars were a lot different back then,” Gates said. “They were fast enough. Now a days these cars can go way too fast.”

WINTER ARRIVES: County receives 3 inches of snow

FATAL CRASH: 1 dead, two injured in U.S. 30 crash

COLUMBIA CITY — The county’s first snow storm caused a fatal crash Wednesday night on U.S. 30.A New Jersey man was pronounced dead on the scene, and two more were taken to the hospital with leg and shoulder injuries.

John Knauer, 50, of Wenonah, N.J. died after he lost control of the SUV he was driving, rolling it several times. His passengers, John Knauer Jr., 31 and Daniel Nevius, 26, escaped with non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Parkview Regional Medical Center, Fort Wayne.
