January 7th
COLUMBIA CITY â A 4-H Open House is scheduled for all families and young 4-H Members at the 4-H Center (West Room) Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.
The 4-H Open House will last approximately one hour. Information about enrollment, projects and other activities will be available.
This will be a great opportunity for families who are not familiar with the 4-H program or are just starting 4-H to ask questions and gather information, note 4-H organizers.
Enrollment forms will be available. Open enrollment for Mini and Regular 4-H will be starting in February through April 2.
COLUMBIA CITY â Kindergarten Round-up dates have been established in March for Whitley County Consolidated Schools.
Parents are instructed by school officials to call each elementary school office to set up an appointment time for the appropriate date.
School, roundup dates and office phone numbers are:

IVY Tech Community College will be holding classes Monday through Wednesday evenings at Columbia City High School beginning Jan. 9 and running through May 2.
Classes include:

â˘Introduction to College Writing
â˘Introduction to Psycho-logy
â˘Anatomy/Physiology I
â˘Concepts in Mathemat-ics
There will be no classes held on Jan. 16, (Martin Luther King Day) and April 2â6 (WCCS Spring Break).

The Whitley County Genealogy Society will meet Thursday, Jan. 19, at 6:30 p.m.., in the Peabody Public Library.
The program is âShare An Ancestor.â
Ancestors do not need to be famous, just a family member you would like to share.
Anyone is welcome to come to the meetings; you need not be a member.
SOUTH WHITLEY â Last October the Friends of the Eel River Trail obtained a 1,600-foot length of the abandoned railbed of the Eel River Railroad in South Whitley.
This parcel of land was previously owned by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
A gravel path runs along the railbed from Calhoun Street in South Whitley through beautiful quiet woods to the old railroad trestle east of town.

COLUMBIA CITY â Despite July 2011âs ban on synthetic marijuana, commonly known as âspiceâ, is still prevalent in Whitley County and much of Indiana.
Though the marijuana-like drug canât be found on shelves at local businesses, Whitley County Drug Task Force Leader and Sheriffâs Detective Bill Brice said people are going to Fort Wayne or buying the substance on the internet.
âThe ordinance has helped keep the illegal stuff off the shelves, but itâs still out there,â Brice said.

COLUMBIA CITY â Sworn in at the earlier Board of Works meeting, the department heads returned to give their reports.
Park Director Mark Green reported that tickets for the departmentâs annual Father-Daughter Dance are now on sale at the Park Office and City Hall.
The dance will be held Feb. 3 at First Church of God in Columbia City and begins at 6 p.m.
Cost is $25 for a father-daughter combination, and $10 for an additional daughter.

Sacred music concert at West Etna Community Church Jan. 13
LARWILL â The Moody Chorale, conducted by Dr. Xiangtang Hong of the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, will be performing Friday, Jan. 13 at 7:30 p.m. at West Etna Community Church near Larwill.
West Etna Community Church is located at 6552W-750N in northwest Whitley County.
Founded in 1946, the Moody Chorale has long been established as one of the leading collegiate choral organizations in the United States, specializing in sacred music.
