COLUMBIA CITY — Residents of Whitley County who are registered to vote in their district of residence may begin absentee voting April 9. According to Jessica Hockemeyer of the Whitley County Clerk’s Office, the Election Office is now accepting applications. Ballots will be mailed out beginning on March 23.
Absentee voting will take place at the Whitley County Clerk’s Office in the courthouse at 101 W. Van Buren Street in Columbia City. The clerk’s office is located on the second floor, room 18.
COLUMBIA CITY — While many voters will be heading to familiar polling locations in May for the primary elections, some will be venturing toward unfamiliar scenery to do their voting.
The Whitley County Election Office is making some changes this year to reduce the number of locations and workers available to the public. Several polling locations will be combined, including in South Whitley, Cleveland Township and Smith Township.
“We’re very excited about this,” said Clerk of Courts Debbie Beers. “We’re going to save the county some money while making things better for the voters.”

CHURUBUSCO — There is a new police officer in Churubusco. Mike Engle was approved to replace former Town Marshall John Hart, who retires from police work March 19. The Churubusco Town Council unanimously approved Engle to begin full-time duties March 19.
In new business, the council approved a new Churubusco Façade Grant Program. “This is a program connected with the Main Street Project,” said Frank Kessler, council president. With the grant a total of $25,000 is available for Churubusco businesses to apply for grants.
COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Council addressed several fiscal concerns at their monthly meeting on Tuesday, including those involving county employees.
The Assessor’s Office requested budgeting to hire a new employee to join the office staff. The move comes on the heels of County Assessor Angie Heath’s news that she would be taking a leave of absence from May through October of this year.
Turtle Days Fish Fry
set for Friday
CHURUBUSCO — A Turtle Days Fish Fry fund raiser will be held March 9 at 11 a.m. at the American Legion Post 157.
All you can eat is $8, dinner is $7 and sandwiches are $5. Carry-out is available. All proceeds will benefit the Turtle Days Festival.

ALBION – Cornerstone Christian School, located at 4304 S. Oak St. in Albion, will hold a Tenderloin and Fish Fry Saturday, March 10 from 3:30-7:30 p.m.
