BREAKING REGIONAL NEWS: Body found floating in Fort Wayne river

Fort Wayne police were called Saturday morning to the old Wells Street Bridge in Fort Wayne with a report of a body floating in the river.
According to a police report, a 911 call was received from a fisherman who saw the body floating in the water.
Officer’s arrived along with the Fort Wayne Fire Departments water rescue squad. The fire department, with the use of their boat, were able to secure the body on the north shore line. The Indiana Department of Natural Resources, along with the Allen County Coroner’s Office, were contacted and assumed responsibility over the investigation.

WHITKO'S WILLIAM TELLS: WMS archers shine at state competition

COLUMBIA CITY — After Whitko’s archery team competed at the state level March 16, the team came came back with a Team Spirit Award, as well as having a student, Cody Gardner, place fourth in his division. The tournament was held at the Verizon Center in Muncie.
“It’s the second time they’ve won the Spirit Award for the school in the state, they’ve got a lot of school spirit with these kids,” said Coach Bill Green.

Easter Egg Hunt April 7
An Easter Egg Hunt will be held at Tri Lakes Baptist Church Saturday, April 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 am.
The event is for any child between the ages of three and the fifth grade.
Activities will consist of game time, story time, puppets, Egg Roll and an Egg Hunt. Bags will be provided for each child.
Also, there may be a special appearance by a very large chicken. The event is free of charge.

2012 BUDGET IS BACK: WCCS hears report and plans for 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Consolidated School Director of Business and Operations Tony Zickgraf gave a report to WCCS board members on the finalized 2012 budget last week. Though the budget was approved by the board itself late in 2011, there is a lengthy proposal and adjustment process it must go through with the state before receiving a final approval; thus, an early 2012 time-frame is not uncommon.

Zickgraf’s report provided all the numbers and focused on the comparison between 2012 and 2011.

PHASE II SEWER PROJECT: S. Whitley council hears updates

SOUTH WHITLEY — Phase II of the waste water treatment facility project continues to prosper as project manager David Harvey with Fleis and Vandenbrink presented the South Whitley town council with partial payment application number three to Gerig-Ottenweller, who is the contractor for the project.

Fleis and Vandenbrink provides a wide-range of service for municipal, industrial, institutional, commercial and private development clients.

DEVOL FIELD TO SEE IMPROVEMENTS: Wigent gets nod

COLUMBIA CITY — By unanimous vote and with a price tag of $14,500, Wigent Excavating was awarded the DeVol Field project by Columbia City Park Board members at its monthly meeting Monday evening. Improvements include grating, tile and drainage.

BREAKING NEWS: Three injured in early morning crash

COLLAMER — Indiana State Police are saying alcohol appears to be a factor in a one-vehicle crash early this morning involving two Whitley County adults and one unidentified 15-year-old, all of whom were injured in the crash.
According to the ISP, a vehicle driven by Trenton A. Gable, 21, 514 S. Line St., South Whitley, left the roadway at 4519 S. CR 900 W. near Collamer.
Police report the vehicle struck a utility pole, a cement post, rolled onto its top and then struck a tree. The accident report said seatbelts were not used.

UNITED WAY DIRECTOR STEPS DOWN: John Black leaving after two years at the helm

After two years at the helm, John Black is stepping down as executive director of the United Way of Whitley County.
Black has been offered a new position in management with a northeastern Indiana company.
He will be leaving United Way by mid-April, according to Barbara Bilger, United Way board president.
“We have been fortunate to have John serve as our leader for these last couple of years. John has great passion for United Way, having served as a board member and volunteer for several years before becoming our executive director. We wish him the best in his new role.”

COLUMBIA CITY — Three years ago, 15-year-old Ivory West from Whitko High School picked up a guitar that had been hanging on the wall at her home in Pierceton and began strumming the chords. Her father, Rod West, told her if she would practice some basic chords he taught her, she could take lessons. Later, as a Christmas gift, he gave her a certificate for lessons.
