PROPERLY TRAINED: Students learn fire safety

FORT WAYNE — None of them had ever made a 911 phone call or dropped out of a second-floor window. Now the third-grade students of Whitley County have done so.
That is thanks to Capts. Dave Meadows and Carlos Gomez of the Fort Wayne Fire Department. Capt. Meadows lives in South Whitley.
The students recently completed their visit to the Fort Wayne Fire Department’s Safety Village and Survive Alive House in Fort Wayne.
“We bring our classes here every year, and I learn something new each time,” said Susan Fricke, teacher at Northern Heights Elementary School.

ROYAL TEA PARTY: Event held at CHS

CHURUBUSCO — It was a first for the Churubusco Fine Arts Program, a tea party, that is.
Thirty-three young girls, one young boy, and a hand-full of moms and dads attended the Royal Tea Party hosted by Cinderella and Prince Charming Saturday at Churubusco High School.
When each participant arrived, the step-mother, portrayed by Peyton Brandt, welcomed each individually on behalf of King Maximillian (Jacob McClure) and Queen Maisie (Caitie Eakins).
Some party goers dressed in their finest attire, jewels and even some glass slippers as they enjoyed tea and cookies.

JAILED: Col. City man arrested after car accident

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man was arrested Sunday after leaving the scene of his girlfriend’s accident and operating a vehicle during a lifetime suspension, two felonies.
According to a witness, Lyle Orr, 46, of 517 N. Oak St. in Columbia City, allegedly drug his unconscious girlfriend off the road after she crashed her moped in the area of CR 300 E and Old Trail Rd.
“He stated he witnessed a man drag a female by one arm off the roadway and into the ditch,” Indiana State Police Trooper Joel Lemmon’s case report said.

WHITKO MUSICAL: Students perform 'Mattress'

SOUTH WHITLEY — The auditorium of Whitko High School was packed for Saturday evening’s performance of the musical “Once Upon a Mattress”, with music by Mary Rodgers, lyrics by Marshall Barer and book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller, and Marshall Barer.
The musical was performed Friday and Saturday, and is the story of the matrimonial tyranny of the extremely talkative Queen Aggravain, played by Cece Cherry, concerning the marriage of her son, Prince Dauntless, played by Jordan Gregory.

ARBOR DAY: Mary Raber students celebrate trees

COLUMBIA CITY — It only took a couple moments for the grown-ups to learn the second-grade students at Mary Raber Elementary School knew their facts about Arbor Day.
Mayor Ryan Daniel began the assembly Friday afternoon by proclaiming it Arbor Day not only in Columbia City but around the world.
“Arbor Day was started in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton after he took the suggestion to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture to celebrate tree planting and land preservation both here in America and the world,” said Daniel.

NABBED: Mobile meth lab arrests made

COLUMBIA CITY — Two arrests were made in connection to a vehicle explosion Friday afternoon on Old Trail Rd. near Ind. 5.
Jason Sizemore, 34, of Warsaw is being held at the Whitley County Jail and Trever R. Hanlon, 36, Claypool is booked in Kosciusko County after their car caught fire from an active methamphetamine lab.
According to Whitley County Sheriff’s Det. Bill Brice, the pair were driving from Kosciusko County to Huntington when their meth lab went bad.
Witnesses say the men got out of the vehicle and grabbed a bag and put it under a tree.

BOOKED: Man arrested for leaving the scene of his girlfriend's accident, driving while suspended

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man was arrested Sunday after leaving the scene of his girlfriend’s accident and operating during a lifetime suspension, two felonies.

FATAL: Three-year-old dies in car crash

ROANOKE — A three-year old boy was killed and three other children were severely injured in a Sunday night crash on the edge of Whitley County.

At approximately 8 p.m., a Honda van containing two adults and four children was rear-ended by another Honda van at the intersection of U.S. 24 and Ind. 114, injuring four and taking the life of a three-year-old boy.

The vehicle that hit the van with the children was driven by Mya Tha Tun, 52, of Fort Wayne. Tun was arrested for operating while intoxicated causing death, after rear-ending the other van.

POLICE VS. FIRE: City officials battle at senior center

April 27, 2012

The Columbia City Police and Fire Departments competed in a game of “Family Feud” at the Woodlands Senior Center Thursday afternoon.

The Police Department won, bringing its recent record to 3-0 at the senior center against their public servant counterparts.

CCPD Capt. Tony Hively and fireman Nathan Wilz await the question from Parkview Oak’s clinical liaison and emcee Kristi Maloney.

DREAM COME TRUE: Proving it's never too late for college

COLUMBIA CITY — Sitxty-two-year-old Helen Carter, an Ivy Tech Community College-Northwest student from Churubusco, will walk at her graduation ceremony this spring, fulfilling a dream.
“Follow your dreams, and you can always do it,” said Helen.
“I really didn’t think when I started out that I would be able to do it, but I found out that I can. It’s probably been harder for me than a lot of people, but I stuck to it, and I’m proud that I’ve done it.”
