SIDESTREETS SLIPPERY: Ice coating makes for hazardous driving; schools closed

A thin coat of freezing rain in Whitley County Thursday morning is making for hazardous driving conditions, particularly on county roads, sidestreets and parking lots.

Conditions were expected to improve dramatically by 9 a.m.

Nonetheless, all schools in Whitley County are closed.

Pedestrians should be especially careful on sidewalks, curbs and parking lots.

DRUG FREE INDIANA: Fund distributions for 2012

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Drug Free Indiana (D-FI) was instituted to create a drug-free environment in Whitley County through education, formal assessment of needs, coordination of services, strategic use of prevention plans and the incorporation of consistent justice plans. The program is funded by fines collected by the Whitley County court system in drug cases.

Each year, D-FI submits a request for distribution of the funds back into various parts of the program. D-FI Coordinator Nancy Prickett submitted the 2012 requests to the Whitley County Commissioners for approval.

PARK DEPT: Keeping busy

COLUMBIA CITY — As the Columbia City Parks Department preps for its annual Father-Daughter Dance, it remains quite busy with current and upcoming projects, according to Park Director Mark Green.

Green said tickets for the Father-Daughter Dance have sold out. The dance is Feb. 3 and takes place at First Church of God, beginning with dinner at 6 p.m.

$278M EARNINGS BOON: SDI announces record production

FORT WAYNE – Steel Dynamics Inc. nearly doubled its profits during the past year.
On Tuesday, Steel Dynamics reported 2011 annual earnings of $278 million, or $1.22 per diluted share, on sales of $8.0 billion. The profit is a 98 percent increase over the $141 million, or 64 cents a share, reported on sales of $6.3 billion the prior year.
The Fort Wayne-based steel maker with its processing facility in Whitley County released its performance numbers after markets closed.

HIGH PRICE TAG: Re-bid on tap for trailhead bldg.

COLUMBIA CITY — Two construction bid packages received for the 320-square-foot Morches Park Trailhead building are approximately $40,000 to $55,000 higher than expected – resulting in Columbia City Park Board members choosing to re-bid the project within the next two months.
Two bids were originally opened on Dec. 14, which included Desmonds, Inc. (Fort Wayne) with a bid of $123,700 and three alternate bids totaling $6,700; and W. J. Carey Construction (South Whitley) with a bid of $139,277 and three alternate bids totaling $7,000.

PROFILE: Commissioner Tom Rethlake

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County Commissioner Tom Rethlake grew up on farmlands in Huntington County where he attended the now defunct Union Center High School. While there, he played basketball and baseball.

He went on to play both sports for four years at Huntington College, being named to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Division II all-conference team for basketball during a season in which he was one of the leading scorers in the state.

COMMISSIONERS: Contracts, permits

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Board of Commissioners had a full slate of business in front of them when they met last week following the holiday. Several contracts and permits for construction were among the items discussed.

A previously discussed contract to renew with the facility used to house juvenile inmates that was tabled while wording was changed has been signed.

The Columbia City Board of Works will meet today at 5:15 p.m. in the conference room at City Hall for a regular session.

Wickard, executive director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Indiana Farm Service Agency (FSA) is reminding producers that signup to enroll in the 2012 Direct and Counter-Cyclical Program (DCP) or Average Crop Revenue Election (ACRE) begins today and runs through June 1.
