COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County is ushering in a new committee in the hopes of improving communication and knowledge between departments.
A previously formed Land Committee will now be defunct to make way for a new board, to be known as the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Task Force.
The GIS Task Force will consist of members from several different departments and will serve to help one another learn what decisions are made by specific departments and how those decisions affect other departments within the county, according to GIS Coordinator Dan Weigold.

COLUMBIA CITY — Former Columbia City baseball player Bruce Miller is going to be inducted into the Indiana Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame today.
Miller graduated from Columbia City in 1966 and played for Indiana University as a shortstop.
He got a varsity letter all four years and was named the Eagle’s MVP in 1965 and 1966. In both his junior and senior years, Miller was named all-conference and still holds four school records.
In 1966 he led his team to regional and state titles, where Indiana University spotted and recruited him.
A fast-moving storm system brought travel-disrupting snow to the Northeast late Thursday, but it will turn out to be only an appetizer to the "main course" ahead this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will overspread the area this afternoon and continue into tonight. Total snowfall accumulations of four to seven inches can be expected for Whitley County today and overnight Friday, with continuing frigid temperatures.
It will be a perfect weekend for the Fire & Ice WinterFest on the Courthouse Square in downtown Columbia City.

A vehicle was hi-jacked from South Whitley this morning after a gun was allegedly displayed. The car was not stolen at gunpoint. Area schools were put on lockdown as a precautionary measure. No injuries were reported and according to police, the vehicle fled southbound on Ind. 5 from South Whitley. Stay tuned to our website www.thepostandmail.com for updates
COLUMBIA CITY – Morning snow showers steadily grew into snow squalls, bolstered by gusty winds, making travel in Whitley County nasty by noon.
Temperatures hovered in the low 20s, but will steadily drop into the teens throughout the afternoon.
I-69 was closed south of Fort Wayne due to slide offs and road conditions.
U.S. 30 was slick and hazardous.
Columbia City streets were very slick, especially at intersections.
Weather forecasters indicate the snowfall will diminish to flurries later in the day, with only a few inches of accumulation.
COLUMBIA CITY — When you get to be my age, some things don’t work as well as they used to,” said Clarice “Mitch” Mitchell, a longtime Columbia City native.
With a body weakened from the ravages of 91 years of living and with a mind that skips a note now and again, Mitchell nonetheless tackles each day with his trademark good nature, his signature smile and a few melodies on one of his favorite musical instruments.
He gets around largely with the help of his wife Elsie who smiles and says “He’s worth it, he’s such a good man,” and with the occasional assistance from loving family members.
WHITLEY COUNTY — Two Whitley County Commissioners whose terms are ending have announced plans to run for re-election in November.
Don Amber announced Wednesday that he has filed for re-election to his county commissioner position. He has served as the District 3 commissioner since being elected in 2008.
“While I’ve achieved many of the goals that I had placed upon myself in my first three years, there are some issues that remain unresolved and I want to see them to the end,” Amber said.
Tom Rethlake announced Monday his plans to run for re-election.
COLUMBIA CITY – Whitley County Board of Commissioners Chairman Don Amber presented a proposed Capital Improvement Plan for the county Tuesday. The plan must be adopted by the county in order to receive its certified distribution of County Economic Development Income Tax (CEDIT) funds.
CEDIT funds are funds paid by taxpayers and deposited with the state. The funds are then redistributed, including to the county.

COLUMBIA CITY – The seventh annual Whitley County “Fire and Ice” WinterFest will be taking shape this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21-22 amidst a wintry weather forecast.
Snow showers and highs in the low 30s are forecast.
This unique winter festival hosts ice carvers from the tri-state area who will be demonstrating their talents around the Whitley County Courthouse Square in downtown Columbia City by creating works of arts for local business sponsors.
Blustery winds will blow through Whitley County during the next 24 hours, ushering in snow showers with accumulation possible in the one to two inch range.
