Debris detours families paying respects

November 8, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Preparations were made Friday to ready downtown Columbia City for the Veterans Day Marathon, which will be held today.

While the city put on a polished image for the event, another part of the county was somewhat disarrayed.

Several community members visited South Park Cemetery during the past two days to pay respects to family members and veterans laid to rest.

However, piles of tree branches, stumps and logs covered the lawn, impeding some visitors from accessing the monuments of their loved ones.

County back-bills for incorrect property taxes

November 8, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Property tax bills are due Tuesday for Whitley County residents.

However, according to County Auditor Jennifer McGuire, 72 properties received a tax bill for back taxes accrued during the last three years.

The difference in taxed amount comes from homestead exemptions filed incorrectly.

“The Indiana State code only allows an individual one homestead credit,” McGuire said. “That is allowed for the primary residence only. It is not allowed for a secondary property such as a lake home or rental property.”

ELECTION LOCATION REGULATIONS: Voting comes at an up-front cost

November 8, 2013

COLUMBIA CITY — Polling locations require more than a simple ballot box and voting booth.

To comply with state regulations, the county will invest in upgrading several locations throughout the county to be ready for primary elections in May of 2014.

Debbie Beers is Whitley County’s clerk of the courts and oversees the voting process. She approached County Council members Tuesday to ask for funds up front in the work needed to make locations meet state standards.
