POSTPONED: Many events rescheduled after snow hits area - updated

Due to the weather, Columbia City's boys basketball game at Marion tonight has been postponed. A make-up date is expected to be announced sometime next week.

Several games and events are being cancelled or postponed tonight, as the area is expected to accumulate several more inches of snow throughout the day.

Whitko Schools have postponed all activities for this evening. Churubusco's boys basketball game has also been postponed, with a make-up date of Dec. 17 announced.

Holiday shopping can still include military

COLUMBIA CITY — Although the holiday shopping season was cut short by a late Thanksgiving, there is still time for packages to be shipped to military personnel.

The U.S. Postal Service has detailed shipping dates listed by region on its website www.usps.com.

Little tokens of appreciation, such as cards and notes of appreciation, are welcomed by those serving the country and removed from family during the holidays.

Ringing rallies change for people in need

COLUMBIA CITY — Red kettles are almost as popular of a sight during the holiday season as Santa.

Salvation Army kettles are placed at various retail locations around the county in an effort to raise funds for the nonprofit.

Money collected during the nationwide campaign goes toward helping those in need through a variety of programs.

The national fundraising goal is $3 million, which according to the Salvation Army’s website, the organization has only reached 31 percent in its efforts.

Men face burglary, theft charges

COLUMBIA CITY — A pair of men are accused of committing a burglary and theft in Churubusco.

Nicholas A. Coslet, 20, of Fort Wayne, and Cruz T. Johannsen, 22, of Fort Wayne, were charged with burglary, a Class B felony, and theft, a Class D felony. Both pleaded not guilty and are due back in court in January.

The victim lives in rural Churubusco. Case reports state he told investigators he arrived home from working third shift Dec. 2 at 7 a.m. He fell asleep on his couch and awoke at 2 p.m. At that time, he noticed a number of items missing.

No room for preschool at SWES

Small classrooms and overcrowding has motivated school leaders to move forward with an expansion project scheduled to begin this spring.
