January 23rd
COLUMBIA CITY — After closing its doors in 2007, the former Scott’s Food & Pharmacy location has a new tenant — Dunham’s Sports.
At a reception hosted by the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation Tuesday, Michigan-based real estate developer Jeff Kerr announced the sports retailer will occupy 60 percent of the building.
Kerr touted the support of the EDC and Columbia City.
“We are delighted to potentially have the opportunity to take a vacancy and hopefully warm it up and make it vibrant,” Kerr said.

January 22nd
Indian Springs Middle School’s show choir, City Stars will perform Saturday at Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne. This is the group’s first competition of the season. The choir is under the direction of Karyle Genth with assistance from Phil Genth.
SOUTH WHITLEY — He’s only been sitting in the board president chair for three weeks, but Jorell Tucker has already saved Whitko Community School Corporation an estimated $100,000 over a four year period — proving his leadership as profitable for the district.
In December, before Tucker took the president position, he voted against extending a contract for copier services. He was concerned that no other options were laid before the school board.
Tom McFarland, the district’s business manager, told the school board he would bid out the contract.
COLUMBIA CITY — While focusing on the future, it is also important to remember the past and where one has been.
This fact is true of the Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC). The EDC just released its strategic planning process. This process did take a forward gaze, but also looked back to some of the successes the EDC has had in the past 20 years.
FORT WAYNE (AP) — With their futuristic city, Hydropolis, three Indian Springs Middle School Students participated in a contest at IPFW Saturday.
This is the 12th year for the regional Future City program, held in Fort Wayne. Over the years 85 different schools have competed with various mock cities all targeted to solve some of the world’s biggest environmental issues.
Team Hydropolis placed in the top five and earned a chance to present their city Saturday afternoon fro a spot at the national contest held in Washington, D.C.
WHITLEY COUNTY – The coldest winter morning in some 700+ days has delayed schools and resulted in a wind chill advisory by the National Weather Service until 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The temperature hovered in the low single digits Tuesday morning throughout Whitley County and was not expected to reach higher than the very low teens – at best – this afternoon. Wind chills registered at -10 to -15 Tuesday morning.
A low Tuesday night just below zero is forecast, with a steady warm up for the rest of the week, culminating in above-freezing highs on the weekend.
January 21st
SOUTH WHITLEY — Whitko basketball lost a long-time, avid supporter Saturday.
The Wildcats’ gymnasium seemed oddly quiet to many Whitko fans without the presence of Donna Rose, who died in a single-vehicle crash, just hours before the boys basketball game against West Noble.
Rose, 73, was in the crowd the night before, Friday, as she has been for nearly every Whitko home game for decades.
According to the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department, Rose was killed after her vehicle struck a tree near County Roads 500 South and 800 West at approximately 2:44 p.m. Saturday.
CHURUBUSCO — Smith-Green Community Schools started classes Monday morning with a new superintendent, Galen Mast. Before the transition, SGCS took the time to honor its departing district leader and long-time servant of public education, Ralph Bailey.
Bailey had been with SGCS since July 2012, serving as interim superintendent.
Administrators, Bailey’s family and other well-wishers were on hand for the reception. Among Bailey’s visitors were two Indiana State Representatives, Rep. David Ober and Rep. Kathy Heuer.
