RIVER STUDY: Fort Wayne looks into its downtown rivers

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — Fort Wayne is launching its first comprehensive study of the city's three downtown rivers as part of an effort to spur development along the waterways.

Mayor Tom Henry said Tuesday the study will examine environmental issues, flooding, navigation and recreation uses along the St. Joseph, St. Marys and Maumee rivers. The northeastern Indiana city was founded as a military fort in 1794 along the confluence of those three rivers.

TEEN DATING VIOLENCE AWARENESS: Mayor advises students of healthy relationships

COLUMBIA CITY — To commemorate February as Teen Dating Violence Awareness Month, Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel read a proclamation to students at Columbia City High School Tuesday.

Whitley County’s Domestic Violence Task Force (WCDVTF) spearheaded the event and joined with other local organizations such as the Columbia City Police Department, Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), Leadership Whitley County Youth and Columbia City Youth Council to impress on high school students the seriousness of dating violence.

'BUSCO SCHOOL BUILDING: Construction continues

Construction is still underway at Churubusco schools. Part of the renovation includes a new cafeteria, newly designed front entrance, as well as asbestos removal in the auditorium.

FOR THE TREES: Issues feed interest in new board

SOUTH WHITLEY — In recent monthly meetings, the South Whitley Town Council has entertained several comments from the public regarding tree concerns.

However, the council has continued to be rooted on the issue – trees are the responsibility of the property owners.

Tuesday night’s meeting was no different. Concerns over two possible dead trees were up for discussion, and the board agreed that once again, it should be the concern of the property owner.

STATE OF CITY: Daniel to give address Friday

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City Mayor Ryan Daniel will give a State of the City address Friday at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

The event will be a luncheon from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Whitley County Chamber of Commerce is hosting the address.
Daniel will discuss his first year in office and will also allow time for questions.

Attendance at the event is expected to be robust. Doug Brown, executive director of the Whitley County Chamber of Commerce, estimates 50 people have already made reservations.

BLOOD DONATIONS SOUGHT TODAY

Northeastern REMC is hosting their annual Valentine’s Day Blood Drive today from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

The American Red Cross will be at Northeastern REMC's office at 4901 E. Park 30 Drive in Columbia City. Those that wish to donate can call Deanna at 625-3700 or 244-6111, extension 412, to schedule a donation appointment.

Everyone donating blood will be entered into a region-wide drawing for a NCAA Sweet 16 package from the American Red Cross!
