HAMMOND OIL: Full-service station to close Saturday

COLUMBIA CITY — A throwback to a different era will be marking its conclusion Saturday.

Hammond Oil, located in Columbia City on North Line Street, will be closing its doors Saturday, March 30. What makes Hammond Oil unique is that it is a full-service gas station. This distinct offering will be missed by many in the community.

“People are asking me, ‘what are we going to do?,’” said Randy Wood, assistant manager.

Wood said there are many handicapped individuals who regularly frequent the business. There are some elderly women who come to the station as well.

RAIN BARRELS: Col. City Board of Works passes program

COLUMBIA CITY — Columbia City’s Board of Works and Public Safety unanimously approved the rain barrel program at Tuesday’s meeting.

Citizens may purchase rain barrels and have part of the cost refunded by the city as part of the rebate. Participation in the program meets one of the minimum control requirements.

EXTENSION OFFICE: Board elects new members

COLUMBIA CITY — Whitley County’s Extension Office welcomed three new board members at its annual meeting Tuesday night.

Four members from the 12-member board were completing their term, including John Hilligoss, Meredith Hoffman, John Saggers and Doug Sheetz.

All but Sheetz declined being nominated for a new term. Joining Sheetz, following an election, were new board members Jeff Geiger, Sharon Hesting and Judy Kreider.

FATHER RECEIVES SENTENCE: Greer assisted his sons in manufacturing meth

COLUMBIA CITY — A Churubusco man, who was accused of assisting his sons in manufacturing methamphetamine, was sentenced in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.

Ed Greer, 59, was arrested in December and charged with aiding in the manufacturing of methamphetamine. Greer previously pled guilty to aiding in manufacturing of meth, a Class B felony, and had 11 other counts dismissed as part of a plea agreement.
