Lighthouse to host fundraiser

COLUMBIA CITY — An event to support The Lighthouse Shelter has been slated for a new date.

Originally the Day On the Lake tour of Loon Lake was planned for Aug. 17 at 3 p.m., but due to a conflict in scheduling, the event has been moved to Aug. 10 at 4 p.m.

In addition to the date change, the pricing has been adjusted as well.

What was originally a $35 per person excursion is now $25 per person.

ACADEMIC RECOGNITION: Local students recognized

WHITLEY COUNTY — Various colleges and university honored Whitley County students for their academic success.
Recognition went to:
Ohio Northern

Ellen L. Hazelet, daughter of Bruce and Kathleen Hazelet, 3651 S. Washington Rd, Columbia City, has been named to the Ohio Northern University deans’ list for the spring semester 2012-13. She is a sixth year majoring in pharmacy.
The deans’ list includes students who attain a grade point average of 3.5 or better on a 4.0 grading system.

FENCE FOLLY: Structure erects concerns with South Whitley neighbors

SOUTH WHITLEY — Controversy over a white, vinyl fence continued at the South Whitley Town Council meeting July 23.

Bruce Gable, of South Whitley, was on hand with several residents to see what the town had decided after the complaint of a fence was brought up at a previous meeting.

According to Gable, a home located at 704 N. Cherry Ln., South Whitley, has erected a fence within a utility easement. Gable’s understanding was the neighborhood covenants stated no fences were allowed.

GUILTY PLEA: Sweet to admit to drug charge

COLUMBIA CITY — A man arrested for using drugs at Duff’s Bar in Columbia City is scheduled to plead guilty in August.

Chad Sweet, 36, was charged with dealing in a Schedule II controlled substance, a Class B felony.

His attorney, Brad Voelz, said Sweet had some personal matters to attend to for his family, but scheduled a change of plea hearing Aug. 19.

Sweet was arrested in April. At that time, witnesses told law enforcement officers they saw Sweet and another man in the men’s restroom at Duff’s.

Participants in Joni Walker’s Art Camp, hosted by Peabody Public Library this week, have the opportunity to learn a variety of skills.

PUBLIC MEETING: Forum pools ideas on future facility

Citizens interested in the future of aquatics in Columbia City will have a chance for their voices to be heard in a public forum.

The Aquatics Task Force will be holding a public meeting Wednesday, Aug. 14, at 7 p.m. in the Common Council Chambers in City Hall.

Representatives from Counsilman Hunsaker and Martin Riley, aquatics architecture firms, will be on hand to give recommendations to residents.
