(May 31, 2013) -- Whitley County Emergency Management Agency has advised the county of a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for all of Whitley County until 10 a.m. Saturday.
Update at 9:40 p.m.: The watch remains in effect. A large cell is coming to the county from the west in the next half hour. Citizens are cautioned to be prepared for high winds.

Nadia Rhodes, 8, made use of South Whitleyâs newest playground, Adventure Mania, Thursday.
The new equipment was installed and open to children to utilize last week.
Adventure Mania is the second phase of the town park renovation. Doodle Bug Village, also in South Whitleyâs town park, was erected over the last several years.
COLUMBIA CITY â Passages, Inc. is offering a Summer Youth Enrichment Program which will begin on June 10.
The program consists of two four-week sessions designed for individuals with intellectual disabilities who attend a Whitley County middle or high school to practice and enhance their academic, social and vocational skills in a structured and fun environment.
The participants will be offered local field trips to Morsches Park including the splash pad, The Humane Society of Whitley County and Paigeâs Crossing.
COLUMBIA CITY â American Legion Post 98 in Columbia City hosted a ceremony Memorial Day to honor local men and women who have fallen serving in the U.S. Armed Forces.
Deceased members of American Legion Post 98 and VFW Post 5582 from the past year were memorialized.
They were Adrian R. Beers, Phil Glassley, Teddy R. Hare, Jack Kessie, Phillip L. Lundblad, Jack Moore, Chester Napier, Talbert W. Pittenger, Marquis Reid Jr., Robert Sandager, William H. Smith, Herman P. Stuersel, John Boggess, Earl McEntire, Tony Treece and Bobby Turner.
COLUMBIA CITY â Columbia Cityâs Rotary Club hosted, State Police Officer Brian Bills at its Tuesday meeting.
Although Billsâ main job is that of a state police officer for Indiana, he is an advocate for the rejuvenation of Camp Whitley. Bills started his involvement in Camp Whitley by just offering a gun-safety program to campers prior to them being active on the rifle range. This is just one of a host of activities offered at the camp.
As school came to an end for Whitko Community School Corporation, an unexpected visitor was found on the premises of Whitko High School.
A large snapping turtle was camped out on the lawn at WHS, and Joe Jackson, head custodian for the school, took on the challenge of removing the turtle from the property.
The turtle had made its way to the front of the building, but it was uncertain where it came from.
COLUMBIA CITY â A Columbia City man who pleaded guilty to burglary was sentenced in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.
Charles Rector, 18, pleaded guilty last month to burglary, a Class B felony. He was sentenced by Judge James Heuer to six years at the Whitley County Jail, with three years to serve and three suspended.
At his hearing last month, the state dismissed a charge of theft upon accepting his guilty plea to burglary.
Rectorâs admission of guilt was âstraight upâ â that is, it was not part of a plea agreement. This left Heuer with a 6-to-20 year sentencing range.
SOUTH WHITLEY â Great things are happening for businesses in challenging times.
That is the opinion of U.S. Congressman Marlin Stutzman. The Republican representative of Indianaâs third district was in South Whitley Wednesday and visited Shindigz, among other stops.
Stutzman lauded the work of the company.
âThis is my first visit here,â he said. âThere are 450 jobs, and here in the district that is always important.
âJobs are the number one focus of what we do in Washington.â
Stutzman was quick to point out that times have been difficult lately for companies.
COLUMBIA CITY â Residents of Columbia Cityâs southeast side had the opportunity to participate in a neighborhood meeting to discuss city ordinances Thursday.
Sixteen citizens from the area around Swihart and Collins Streets met with Mayor Ryan Daniel, Councilman Nicole Penrod and Councilman Dan Weigold at Gospel-Land Ministries on Douglas Avenue to discuss issues of importance to the neighborhood.
