COLUMBIA CITY â€” Cassie Gareiss, of Columbia City, is a 21 year old facing several changes in a short period of time. She is engaged to Colton Streeter and the couple is planning a wedding later this summer.
The couple will also be relocating to Indianapolis.
These events will follow Gareissâ€™ graduation from Grace College where she has earned a degree in graphic design and a minor in photography.
â€śI know it is a lot of change in a short amount of time, but we are excited,â€ť Gareiss said.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Work will progress soon on the Liberty Mills Road project, and the taxpayers of Whitley County will pocket savings.
Michael Barton, director of the County Highway Department, updated the Whitley County Commissioners at Mondayâ€™s meeting.
Barton has held discussions with officials in Allen County about the next step for the project. The price tag for Whitley County is approximately $101,000. Previously, over the next three years, the county was going to have to pay in equal installments.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” A Columbia City man was sentenced in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday for dealing in methamphetamine. Michael Reaser pleaded guilty and received a 10-year sentence to be served at the Whitley County jail. Four years of the sentence were suspended and six will be served.
Whitley County Circuit Court Judge James Heuer said having Reaser serve the sentence locally would be better since he could perhaps get on work release and help support his child.
FORT WAYNE â€” Dontay Martin "created his own war zone" in the early morning of Sept. 9, firing dozens of bullets into the night, striking an emergency vehicle.
According to an area newspaper, Martin appeared not to care about what the judge was saying or the lengthy prison sentence he was facing, as was the case during his entire trial last month.
Before Mondayâ€™s hearing began, and as it continued, Martin sat relaxed in the jury box â€“ looking everywhere but at the judge.
WARSAW â€” A Warsaw man has been preliminarily charged with murder after allegedly strangling his roommate.
Kosciusko County Sheriffâ€™s Deputies responded to the Hide-Away-Hills Mobile Home Park, 2441 W. CR 250 South, lot #34, at approximately 12:47 p.m. Sunday in regards to conducting a welfare check. Officers arrived and located a deceased male and immediately contacted the K.C.S.D. crime scene investigator, detectives, and the Kosciusko County Coronerâ€™s Office. The victim, identified as Lionel Dale King, 51, appeared to have been strangled by a cord according to investigators.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Republicans from Whitley County held a caucus for party reorganization Saturday.
Voting for party leaders only happens once every four years, so for Chairman Matt Boyd, this was a first.
After the votes were tallied, all positions remained the same. Laurell Hodges is vice-chairwoman, Neil Hanni is treasurer, Paul Zilz is secretary and Matt Boyd continues as the chairman.
â€śThank you for all your support,â€ť Boyd said. â€śThis has been more work than I thought, but itâ€™s been rewarding.â€ť
Boyd applauded the efforts of those re-elected to their positions.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Corinne Kauffman, Whitley Countyâ€™s Distinguished Young Woman for 2013, joined high school seniors from across Indiana for DYWâ€™s state program.
The event was held Thursday and Friday night with a myriad of talent presentations, questions, interviews and other behind the scene opportunities for the contestants.
Kauffman was received by family and friends at a reception in her honor Sunday.
Held at the Whitley County Community Foundation, Kauffman shared her weekâ€™s experiences with her supporters.
COLUMBIA CITY â€” Whitley County Consolidated School Districtâ€™s Board of Trustees heard about regional benefits in its own backyard recently.
Joshua Wenning, executive director of Region 8 of the Education Service Center, explained to the board how this regional group supports local education.
WCCS is one of 45 member school districts from 14 counties in Region 8. The office is located in Decatur.
Wenning shared the benefits for instructors, such as development workshops. He also discussed advantages for districts, such as a pooling of substitute teachers.
PLANO, TEXAS â€” A man who was arrested with Duane DuCharme has confessed to conspiring to launder drug proceeds.
Jason Peebles was seen with DuCharme, a Whitley County businessman, in April. The pair was spotted by investigators outside a storage facility in Plano, Texas exchanging money. Peebles gave DuCharme $500,000 in cash.
DuCharme was picked up by investigators buying a shipping box at an office supply store later that day.
