April 19th
Park Director Mark Green has closed Morsches Park due to severe flooding. The park and ball fields will remain closed until Monday.
In the meantime, for safety reasons, Green asks that everyone stay out of the park.
COLUMBIA CITY — Individuals who were out driving Thursday evening or Friday morning likely noticed the effects of recent heavy rains in Whitley County.
Spotters reported to the National Weather Service that 3.51 inches had fallen by 1 p.m. Thursday. An additional report said 2.3 inches had accumulated by 4:30 a.m. Friday.
Whitley County Consolidated Schools closed for Friday. Whitko and Smith-Green Community Schools were both on two-hour delays. WCCS Superintendent Pat O’Connor said poor road conditions influenced the decision.

Whitley County has been placed under a tornado watch until 5 p.m. by the National Weather Service.
Weather conditions today include strong winds, showers and potentially strong thunderstorms that will become less widespread around late afternoon.
COLUMBIA CITY (April 18, 2013) — The Northeast Hoosier Conference will cease existence in the summer of 2015.
According to NHC President and Norwell High School Principal Mark A. Misch, all eight member schools will leave the athletic conference in two years.
COLUMBIA CITY — At Whitley County Consolidated Schools’ (WCCS) meeting of the Board of School Trustees Monday, April 8, a new high school was publicly discussed for the first time in several years.
At that meeting, WCCS Superintendent Pat O’Connor said public input would be important to the district.
The Post & Mail sought feedback from its Facebook followers last week and found public opinion on several sides of the spectrum.
Some felt the new high school was needed as soon as possible, regardless of the price tag.
COLUMBIA CITY — A Design Processes class is already being taught to students at Eagle Tech Academy, but now that technology has the opportunity to advance learning outside of the classroom.
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics is a worldwide organization that creates a learning environment and competition for students of all ages.
Representatives from FIRST were on hand last night for a presentation to students and parents on starting a program at ETA.
COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man arrested for allegedly committing burglary and theft at a local church had his bond reduction request denied at Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.
Cody Miller, 21, was arrested in February for allegedly stealing and committing burglary at St. Paul of the Cross in Columbia City. He was in court requesting a bond reduction. Currently his bond is at $50,000, which would require at $5,000 payment to release him.

College and career coaching was offered to students from all three Whitley County high schools yesterday. The event was part of a state-wide initiative, College Success Coalition. Connecting students with community leaders, education representatives and career coaches, the day was geared to help high school juniors make better choices.
BOSTON (AP) — Investigators poring over photos and video from the Boston Marathon have an image of a potential suspect in the deadly bombing but do not know his name and have not questioned him, a law enforcement official said Wednesday.
The news came with Boston in a state of high excitement over a possible breakthrough in the case and conflicting information over whether a suspect was in custody. Police and reporters converged on the federal courthouse in the afternoon.
COLUMBIA CITY — A Churubusco man, who was arrested for manufacturing methamphetamine with his brother, received the same sentence as his sibling in Whitley County Circuit Court Monday.
Ben Greer, 30, was arrested in November on six meth-related charges. He pleaded guilty to dealing in methamphetamine and, as part of a plea agreement, the other counts were dismissed.
Greer was sentenced to 10 years at the Indiana Department of Corrections, with eight to serve and two suspended. His brother Andrew received the same sentence, except his will be served at the Whitley County Jail.
