POPPIES TO BLOOM: Initiative will aid local veterans

COLUMBIA CITY — Members of the Columbia City VFW and American Legion are combining efforts to raise money for veterans.

“Buddy” Poppies will be handed out Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17 in Columbia City from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Ace Hardware and Marathon gas station on Armstrong Drive.

ELECTION: Sheriff’s candidates bring experience

WHITLEY COUNTY — There will be a new sheriff in Whitley County by November’s election.

There are three candidates on the Republican ballot for Tuesday’s primary election, looking to replace current Sheriff Mark Hodges.

Hodges has served two consecutive terms and is ineligible for reelection.
The three Republican candidates for sheriff are Marcus Gatton, George D Peppas Jr., and Greg Stier.

Both Stier and Gatton bring several years of law enforcement experience to the table. Peppas was unavailable for comment and no information was provided regarding his campaign.
