Whitko linksters pick up victory

Whitko’s boys golf team grabbed a win on its home course Thursday night over West Noble, 185-203.

The Wildcats were led by Danny Zawlocki who scored 41.

Will Peters carded a 45, followed by Cole Bechtold with a 47.

Matt Hathaway finished in 45 strokes, and Tim Gensch finished off the varsity scoring with a 55.

For West Noble, Tim Dice scored a 47, Grant Moser had a 50, Jacob Musselman carded a 52, Tim Stohlman finished in 54 strokes and Kolten Peterson finished off the Chargers’ scoring with a 56.

Club of ‘friends’ ends school year with a picnic

Circle of Friends ended the year with its annual picnic at Morsche’s Park in Columbia City.

The Columbia City High School sponsored club holds a picnic in May to celebrate the friendships created during the year, and to welcome the eighth graders from Indian Springs Middle School to the high school.

Ali Ioane, Functional Life Skills teacher at ISMS and Karen Koday, Functional Life Skills teacher at CCHS, work together with Circle of Friends to create a day filled with food, fun and games.

The students took charge and organized all of the activities for the day.

COSTS TO CONSTRUCT: Whitko officials open bids for school building projects

Construction bids were received and discussed at a recent Whitko Community School Corporation board meeting for building projects at both Pierceton and South Whitley Elementary schools totaling $18,659,760.

Although contracts have not been released, school leaders discussed the bids submitted and approved WCSC administration to award the contracts subject to discussion and approval.

Whitko applauds senior success at ceremony

An annual awards program honors Whitko High School seniors who have achieved academic and extra-curicular success.

This year’s group was described as “outstanding” by WHS Principal David Parker.

“I find myself in such a state of pride for what these students accomplished,” said Parker. “What they have done is a testament to the great things we do as a whole here at WHS.”

TRASH PICKUP TO BEGIN NEXT WEEK: City provides opportunity to beautify properties

Items are beginning to pile up on curbsides in Columbia City.

The 2014 junk pick up dates are approaching, and citizens are preparing items to be collected by Columbia City’s trash service.

Junk pick up will be divided into two sections this year — the west side of the city will be collected Saturday, June 7, and the east side of the city will be collected Saturday, June 14.

The trash must be taken to the curbsides or alleys before 6 a.m. on those days.
