SCRAPPERS SNATCHED: Pair allegedly took items from church building site

COLUMBIA CITY — A pair of Fort Wayne men were caught stealing items from a church and homes in Columbia City last month.

Joshua Paff, 31, and Michael Holloway, 34, were caught in the early morning hours by Columbia City Police Officer Tim Pittenger May 27 after dispatchers received a tip of suspicious people on South Line Street, near St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church.

Witnesses said they saw the men get into a van and head north through an alley.

Pittenger spotted the vehicle, and saw a man walking out of an open garage with a large patio umbrella.

CRIMINAL CASE: Former pastor faces child porn charge

KOKOMO(June 11, 2014) – A 76-year-old man has received preliminary charges for possession of child pornography.

Police arrested Byron Blue on a warrant at his home in Kokomo.

In August of 2013 the FBI Child Exploitation Task Force began their investigation for the former pastor of Point Isabelle United Methodist Church.

Blue was the pastor of the church and held weekly youth groups.

The case is under investigation by the Howard County Prosecutor’s and Kokomo Police.

GROWTH POPS: ConAgra expanding Indiana popcorn facility

RENSSELAER(AP)- (June 11, 2014) — ConAgra Foods says it will spend nearly $9 million to expand its popcorn production operations in northwestern Indiana, where it expects to add up to 80 workers in the coming year.

ConAgra announced Wednesday it would spend the money on renovating and equipping its current facility in Rensselaer. The Omaha, Nebraska-based company says it expects construction to start in August, with completion early next year.

EDUCATING LEADERS: Shockney selected by Legion for Hoosier Girls State

COLUMBIA CITY — De Shockney, daughter of Steve and Lisa Shockney, was chosen by the Columbia City American Legion Auxiliary Unit 98 to attend the annual session of Hoosier Girls State.

HGS will be held June 22 through 28 on the campus of Trine University in Angola.

Shockney, a senior at Whitko High School, will join approximately 600 other young women for this government program designed to educate leaders of tomorrow in duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of citizenship. This session of government and practical politics is non-partisan and non-political.

SMOKE-FILLED STORE: Fire fills central Indiana supermarket

LEBANON(AP)- (June 11, 2014) — A fire filled a central Indiana supermarket with smoke, causing the evacuation of about 30 shoppers and employees from the store.

The fire broke out Tuesday evening in the Kroger store in Lebanon. City police Sgt. Ben Phelps says the workers and customers were already outside when emergency workers arrived and that no injuries were reported.

The fire was confined to the produce case area, but the cause wasn't immediately determined.
