$607 REQUEST: County balks at Chamber fee

WHITLEY COUNTY — A routine organizational renewal between the Whitley County Chamber of Commerce and Whitley County Government faced opposition Monday during a meeting of the county’s commissioners.
The disagreement came about from remarks made by Commissioners Tom Rethlake and Don Amber regarding Whitley County Chamber of Commerce Director Doug Brown’s $607 request for the Whitley County’s chamber membership renewal.

City planning for its future parks

COLUMBIA CITY — A key component in the planning process for any agency that serves the public is input from those being served.
Mark Green, Columbia City Parks and Recreation superintendent, along with Aimee Shimasaki, a representative of Martin Riley Architects and Engineers, hosted a meeting Monday afternoon at City Hall to provide the public with an opportunity for input on the 5-year Comprehensive Plan being developed for the Columbia City Parks.
“We are meeting to get input,”said Green, “Not to present finished plans.”

DR. PATRICIA O'CONNOR: Superintendent contract renewed thru ’17

COLUMBIA CITY – The Whitley County Consolidated Schools Board of Trustees met Monday evening at the Marshall Community Center. By a unanimous vote, the Board voted to extend the contract of WCCS Superintendent Dr. Patricia O’Connor for a year. O’Connor has two years remaining on her current contract.
Board President Don Armstrong said, “Giving her a one-year extension will give her essentially a three-year contract.”

STUDY RELEASED: Whitley County Jail needs additional beds and maintenance cited

WHITLEY COUNTY — Representatives from DLZ, an Indianapolis-based architectural firm, gave a preliminary presentation to the Whitley County Commissioners Monday.
The presentation’s topic — the aging and over crowded Whitley County Jail and Corrections facility. Due to the county’s correctional issues, as well as recent changes in Indiana’s legislature, the commissioners found it necessary to have a report commissioned by DLZ in October.

SWORN IN TO STATE SENATE: Amanda Banks takes oath to temporarily replace husband

INDIANAPOLIS – State Senator-elect Amanda Banks took the oath of office Tuesday morning to temporarily fill the Indiana State Senate seat held by her husband, Jim, while he’s deployed to Afghanistan with the U.S. Navy. The Bankses reside in Columbia City.

Amanda Banks was elected on December 4 by a caucus of precinct committeemen to represent District 17.

NATIONAL SCHOOL BUS SAFETY WEEK: Whitko elementary school students take part

SOUTH WHITLEY — The Whitko School Corporation Transportation Department used the week of October 20-24, National School Bus Safety Week, to instruct the students on bus evacuation drills in case a school bus caught on fire.
The program consisted of a short video on how to complete an organized evacuation. The students also participated in hands-on training in the bus.

DEADLINE: Local small biz EDC applications due Friday

COLUMBIA CITY — The Whitley County Economic Development Corporation (EDC) announced Monday the EDC’s Small Business and Enrepreneuership Initiative (SBEI) is preparing for the second part of the Growth Ventures business accelerator program, which will begin Jan. 12, 2015.

Columbia City’s High School’s all-girl show choir, City Lights, performs during the school’s annual Holiday Concert in the Newell Rice Auditorium Monday night. The event featured the school’s various bands and choirs for a festive ensemble.

SEEKING FUNDS: Museum wishes to build annex

WHITLEY COUNTY — In an effort to save space and preserve the historical records of the county, the Whitley County historical society is looking to build an additional annex, adjacent to the museum’s main building.
“In the area of the second floor of the Riley home, (the location of the museum) as well as the basement, are beginning to fill up with boxes,” said Whitley County Historical Museum Director Dani Tippmann.
