HEATED DEBATE: Truck stop rezoning project continues

COLUMBIA CITY — A request to rezone a parcel of land in order to accommodate a possible truck stop was approved at Monday’s Whitley County Commissioners meeting. Monday’s meeting was attended by concerned parties both in favor of and against the truck stop proposed for the rezoned intersection.

RECREATIONAL FATALITY: Man drowns trying to get beach ball in Fort Wayne

FORT WAYNE (AP) — Indiana conservation officers are investigating the drowning death of a 31-year-old man in a Fort Wayne lake.

Conservation officers say Adam Palm was swimming in Kekionga Lake after 2 p.m. Monday when a beach ball blew past him.

They say he attempted to swim out to retrieve the ball and began to struggle and went under water.

His body was recovered by the Fort Wayne Water Rescue Team within 30 minutes in about 10 feet of water and about 30 feet from shore.
He was pronounced dead at Lutheran Hospital.

ROAD WORK UPDATE: Daytime Restriction to US 30 Scheduled for Friday, July 11

WHITLEY COUNTY (July 7, 2014) -- U.S. 30 is expected to offer more delays to drivers beginning Friday, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Motorists can expect to see one lane traffic configuration resume.

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Fort Wayne District announces the daytime restriction of U.S. 30 to one lane between Lincolnway (Columbia City) and Ind. 5 (Larwill) is scheduled to resume Friday, weather permitting.

The restriction will be in place as part of the US 30 resurface project from Ind. 9 to Ind. 5.

FELINE FRENZY: 4-Hers paraded cats at Cat Show

COLUMBIA CITY — Although the Whitley County 4-H Fair officially begins Friday, cats took center stage at a recent show at the fairgrounds. Whitley County 4-Hers paraded their cats as part of the 4-H Fair Cat Show, held June 28 at the Whitley County 4-H Fairgrounds. Seven students participated in showmanship, cage design, demonstrations and costumes.

BACK TO SCHOOL DONATIONS: Whitley Co. children gain support with Salvation Army

COLUMBIA CITY — The Salvation Army of Whitley County will be preparing to help children return to school with a new pair of shoes and a backpack filled with required supplies. The Salvation Army’s Tools For School distribution will take place Saturday, Aug. 2.
