MEETING AGAIN: Fleetwood, Williams celebrate NBA award

SOUTH WHITLEY — When Whitko High School selected Roger Fleetwood as its new boys basketball coach last summer, the Whitko basketball program gained coaching experienced that involved All-Americans, a state championship and an NBA star.

The National Basketball Association announced April 20 that Toronto Raptors guard Lou Williams was named the 2015 Sixth Man of the Year. More than a decade ago, Williams was lacing up to play under Coach Fleetwood for South Gwinnett High School in Atlanta, Ga.

ARREST: Whitley wanted man caught in Syracuse

SYRACUSE — A wanted man is being held at the Whitley County Jail without bond after a foot pursuit and fight with police on Monday.

Officers from several Kosciusko County agencies were involved in a foot pursuit and arrest of a wanted man from Whitley County in the town of Syracuse.

Kosciusko County Drug Task Force units, along with officers from Syracuse, Indiana State Police and the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, attempted to apprehend an individual, identified as Kevin Michael Hall, 39, of Pierceton.

COUNTY CONSIDERING: Regional sewer district

WHITLEY COUNTY — The Whitley County Board of Commissioners heard a presentation by GAI Consultants on the establishment of a regional sewer district at its April meeting.

GAI consultants presented information that they had gathered in hopes of being contracted to provide services in the creation of such a district for those areas not now served by a sewer district.

GAI pointed out to the commissioners that they had been in contact with Indiana Department of Environmental Management officials in determining which approaches would best serve the Commissioners in this endeavor.

WELCOME HOME: Banks focused on family before politics

COLUMBIA CITY — A week after his return from Afghanistan, State Senator Jim Banks is taking a break from the world to focus on his family.

Banks returned home from his duty with the U.S. Navy last Tuesday to a welcoming party of his family and friends.

BUS COLLISION: WCCS response

COLUMBIA CITY — Twenty-three students were on their way to school Monday morning when their school bus collided with a car.

Reports say the bus driver was stopped at the intersection of South Columbia Parkway and Jeffrey Court. The bus driver didn’t see an oncoming car and drove into it. Reports say sun may have been a factor in the crash.

“This is not the kind of thing you ever want to have happen,” said Patricia O’Connor, superintendent of Whitley County Consolidated Schools. “Thankfully, none of the children were hurt.”

SAFE AND SOUND: Missing man returns home

COLUMBIA CITY — A several-hour long search had a happy ending Monday when an elderly man returned safely to his retirement community.

Donald Beckner, 79, was reported missing at approximately 8:30 a.m. Monday. Family members said they hadn’t seen him since 5 p.m. the night before. Beckner lives in the retirement community on Armstrong Drive.

MISSING MAN FOUND: Police find Beckner in his home

COLUMBIA CITY — After an elderly Columbia City man was reported missing this morning, police found him in his home at approximately 2:45 p.m. Monday.

According to police scanner traffic, he was returned home in a vehicle with two Elkhart people and one Illinois person. According to the police scanner, Beckner had a handful of cash.

No further information is available at this time.

Becker was reported missing this morning and police say he hadn't been seen since 5 p.m. Sunday.

DELAYED START: School bus crashes Monday

COLUMBIA CITY — The ride to school was delayed for several Whitley County Consolidated Schools elementary-school students Monday morning after one of its buses was involved in a crash.

Bus 0101, a Mary Raber Elementary School bus, was involved in a crash with a passenger car just after 7 a.m. Monday, while the bus was picking up children for school in Columbia Shores.

No children were reportedly injured in the crash; however, an ambulance was summoned to the scene for the driver of the passenger car, with reports of a minor head injury, according to police scanner traffic.
