BUST: Traffic Stop in Whitley County Yields 38 Kilos of Cocaine

(Whitley County, IN)-A Fort Wayne truck driver was arrested this past Saturday night by the Indiana State Police on charges related to the possession of cocaine following a traffic stop on US 30 near Columbia City.

At approximately 7:05 p.m., a semi tractor trailer was observed traveling eastbound on US 30, east of State Road 9 when it was said to have purportedly committed a traffic violation as well as had an equipment violation that needed to be addressed.

Snow keeps county EMA busy

Whitley County’s Emergency Management Agency has had a busy start to the year, with several snow storms — and more to come — according to forecasters. Pictured above, Emergency Management Director Cathy Broxon-Ball sorts through paperwork from the year’s first storm, Winter Storm Ion. Broxon-Ball is tasked with collecting all financial data from the storms and report them to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Friday night brought an inch of snow to the area, with another five inches expected today, and the potential for another large snow event next week.

Auditor McGuire seeks re-election

WHITLEY COUNTY — Jennifer “Jen” McGuire has announced her bid for re-election for the Whitley County Auditor’s position under the Republican ticket.

She is the current auditor and has been working for county government for the past 19 years — 17 years in the Noble, Allen and Whitley County Auditor’s offices and two years as the elected clerk-treasurer for the town of Albion. Prior to county government she worked in payroll, accounting and customer service for Group Dekko for 10 years.

WHITLEY COUNTY (Feb. 2, 2014) -- Cold, dry air is in the forecast today after the area received more than an inch of snow overnight. Emergency officials ask drivers to use caution -- there are some slick roads.

Monday's high will be 20 degrees but no snow in the forecast. Tuesday comes with a 70 percent chance of snow with estimated accumulations of 6 inches.

FREMONT(AP) — A northern Indiana pastor and his wife have earned a placed in the Guinness Book of World Records by setting an unusual — and painful — world record.

John and Amy Bruney became the new champs Thursday in Guinness' category of one person skipping rope on a bed of nails resting that's on top of another person. They performed the feat on "Guinness World Records Unleashed" on truTV.

Police net 9 meth labs

COLUMBIA CITY — Three men were arrested after police served three search warrants at Miami Village Mobile Home Park, located on East Old Trail Road in Whitley County Thursday afternoon.

Officials found nine one-pot methamphetamine labs in three mobile homes, on a case the Whitley County Drug Task Force (DTF) worked diligently for three months to complete.

“The Whitley County Drug Task Force did an outstanding job throughout this investigation,”said Marcus Gatton, chief deputy of the Whitley County Sheriff’s Department.

Man accused of strangling pregnant woman

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man is charged with assaulting a pregnant woman in a domestic dispute.

Stephen J. Saboski, 28, was arrested Jan. 22, and charged with domestic battery, strangulation and possession of paraphernalia.

Columbia City Police officers were called to Park Terrace Apartments Jan. 22, with a report of a battery to a pregnant woman in progress, with possible injuries.

Man accused of manufacturing methamphetamine pleads not guilty

COLUMBIA CITY — A Columbia City man accused of methamphetamine manufacturing pleaded not guilty at his initial hearing in Whitley County Circuit Court Tuesday.

Nathan Fugate, 22, was arrested Sunday and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine, possession of reagents, unlawful sale of a precursor, possession of paraphernalia and maintaining a common nuisance.

Members of the Whitley County Drug Task Force searched Fugate’s home and found evidence of meth manufacturing, according to case reports.

Gore tackles sport of a different kind

COLUMBIA CITY — A local student is hoping to pursue his rodeo dreams all the way to the national level.

Jared Gore, 15, is a student at Indian Springs Middle School. He is in his second year of competing for the Indiana Junior Rodeo Association.

The national event is this June in Des Moines, Iowa, and Gore and the rest of his team are working toward that end.

Gore competes in steer wrestling and bull-riding. Regardless of which part of a rodeo a person participates in, they all require dedication.
